joining us now, nbc news national reporter sahil kapur and robert gibbs, boston globe columnist, kimberly atkins, and betsy woods. welcome all. so, cipollone arriving in a suburban earlier this morning, a critical witness. they've been trying and trying to get him. they really publicly shamed him as liz cheney did so emphatically at the other hearings to come in because he was resisting testimony. so, what are they expecting to get from him today? >> that's right, andrea. those images you played were of pat cipollone arriving on capitol hill for his deposition around 8:30 this morning. our team caught him taking a brief break with his lawyers in the middle, but they are back at it. this is a testimony behind closed doors, although it is expected to be video taped and transcribed. a bit of background on pat cipollone. he spoke to this committee informally back in april. he resisted sitting down for a formal deposition. all that changed last week when they dropped a subpoena on him. they alleged participation in the scheme to subvert the election result and stay in power whether it's throug

and robert gibbs, do msnbc contributor is joining us now to talk about this, the messaging coming out of the biden administration with all this. so, robert, great to have you. it seems that the messaging coming out of the biden administration, talking about -- what is the economy is quite strong. nonetheless when you go to the grocery store, you're paying a heck of a lot more today than you are six months ago, or a year ago. you're talking about the approval waiting from the president right now, at record low, not a place that he necessarily wants to be, as we march towards the midterm election. how do they turn on around when it comes to the messaging on the economy when you have these positive numbers, gas prices in some places goal below $4 a gallon, nonetheless americans still seeing it as not a good place for him? >> i think secretary ramona hit pretty well in that clip you showed. but it's really important you live where people live. the understanding that the top line of the economy, the jobs are part strong strong friday, but i think underscoring again where people live, is mo

joining me now, steve leaseman and robert gibbs.w should we read this later consumer confidence report? it's over 90. the economy is still healthy. but the numbers, mostly dropped this year. >> yeah. i mean, the country is in a foul mood. i think the way to think about it. high prices, inflation have really soured people on both the current state of the economy and the economic outlook. whether or not numbers like this are going to determine outcomes is a different question. we have seen americans be in lousy moods before and go out and spend. if you look at the consumer confidence numbers after 9/11, they were buying a lot of cars but in a lousy mood. right now, the real issue is what's happening with american pocketbooks. for low and moderate income americans, prices are rising faster than wages and ability to keep up. that's a big part of what's happening. there's a certain political element to this. for that i would go to another survey. it finds that republicans think the economy is poor by eight to three measure than democrats

i want to bring in robert gibbs, former white house press secretary and an msnbc political analyst. and lauren. josh, the president acknowledging this is a state issue right now. what are the states the white house can take in working with these governors? >> reporter: the biggest acts in the federal government can take are the ones the white house announced within hours of the decision, to try to preserve the ability of women to cross state lines and seek abortions in other states and work with the health agencies to make sure there is wide access to the abortion medication. the white house sees the next battleground on this issue as the states which is the whole purpose of what president biden is doing today, allowing the press to watch some of this meeting with democratic governors in states that are trying to protect the ability of women to get abortions. the bigger problem is the states that are not doing that, that, according to the white house, is where they need to see more actions and voters to make clear that their state and local leaders that they want to see the abortion
