nbc bay area's robert handa joins us. sources are telling you some harrowing moments at the home before the shots rang out. >> well, that's right. acording to the sources, the suspect and an accomplice terrorized the victims in a home invasion and an investigation is going on to continue to figure out the man we saw in court today. andre redman came into the courtroom head down. the 43-year-old was charged with two counts of murder. first for the shooting death of robert bob harden at his home wednesday morning. sources say redman and an acomb plis bound and gagged his son and a family friend, shen shot harden while demanding money. the prosecutor talked cautiously about the case. >> what i can say is that this was a violent home invasion that took place. >> reporter: harden's wife marlene today provided pictures to us and called the husband and father of three a loving family man who lost his life to a terrible act of violence. sources say deputies chased redman on highway 17 when he crashed on the hamilton avenue exit.

live in san jose, robert handa, nbc bay area news. >> good news there, robert. new video showing an intense scenes inside the royal doughnut shop in burlingame. it happened about 5:00 on monday morning when three men entered the shop. you can see them jump over the counteder, force the employee there to the back room, pointing what appears to be a gun in his face. police say it was a fake gun. after that scuffle, the suspect grabs an ice scooper as a weapon. police say the employee was not injured, the three suspects did steal the atm machine inside the doughnut shop and got away. >>> three blocks in that doughnut shop, another robbery. police say this man is wanted for allegedly stealing fragrance bottles from the self for rah store. >>> a dead whale was moved out to sea. since monday the rotting carcass of a 40-foot humpback whale has floated in a kel bed just offshore in santa cruz. marine biologists paddled out to investigate and found no obvious signs of death. experts say they prefer not to interfere and let the body decompose naturally. but because it was

robert handa joins us live. what do we know about this? >> reporter: we are at the store in san mateo where there has been a lot of drama. police say on sunday evening they responded to this pet supply store on el camino real shortly after 5:00 p.m. on a report a dog died on the premises. police say a man brought his three docks be aschunds to the r grooming. the groomer came out a few minutes later holding one dog, which was now bleeding from the mouth and having trouble breathing. police say he took the animal to an on-site veterinarian but the dog died. police investigated and arrested zarata. >> after the dog died, the vet did a postmortem x-ray and found the dog had two broken ribs and punctured lungs. since then, the peninsula humane society has taken custody of the diseased dog and they'll do an exam. >> reporter: now, zarati faces a felony count of animal cruelty. the sergeant says investigators say the petsmart store is not being investigated for this incident but they will check back records to see if similar problems occurred. w

robert handa joins us from campbell this evening. robert, two cities rarely with this violent crime. what's the latest? >> raj, right now, the hectic scene that's been here all day around hamilton avenue has finally calmed down. at this hour, investigators are still questioning the man who has not yet been classified a suspect. but is apparently somehow involved in this series of violent acts. >> investigators are busy with two crime scenes right now to figure out how a homicide and possible homicide are connected. just before 11:00 a.m., santa clara county sheriff's office responded it a report of shots fired at ma drone drive in red wood estates near los gat yoes. inside, investigators found a bloody hectic scene. >> one person was transported and medically treated with nonlife threatening injuries. another person was treated by fire and ems. >> everybody knows everyone. so it is a very unusual occurrence. >> an alert went out for a silver toyota prius that neighbors saw leaving the scene. it was spotted later near lark avenue. a pr

robert handa looked to see if something was done with the list of 100 code violations. >> reporter: it's easy to see the impact of code violations at this east san jose apartment complex. tenants point out gaming holes and patchwork throughout the 40 units. both signs of damage and ongoing repair. a tenant representative said the city finally paid attention to their problems after two children had to leap to safety during a fire in june 2015. she said inspectors then found 109 code violations. but in her opinion, san jose's code enforcement has not done enough since and has given the owner too much time for compliance without any fines since the fire. the group's south bay tenants union echoed that complaint. >> knowing that the focus is on there between tenants, advocates, the media, city council, that they would have taken care of it but that hasn't been the case. >> reporter: the city acknowledges the list of violations. in fact there were violations in almost every unit. but officials say soon after the fire they had the ener replace all smoke detectors, 22 stoves, then later many ba

robert handa shows us the health department is keeping a close watch on south bay schools. >> reporter: it was quite a crowd inside the office of little glenn elementary. students filled the nurse's room saying they felt sick, including symptoms associated with norovirus, a gastro intestinal illness that has become a concern. two weeks ago nbc bay area reported the san jose unified school district took action at horace mann and other schools when students complained of stomach problems. the focus is on yet another school. >> we noticed an increase here at willow glen elementary of kids with vomiting and diarrhea. since we've had situations at horace mann and backratt we jumped on it. >> reporter: the school notified public health, parents, then closed playgrounds and canceled field trips. one parent taking her children home from the nurse's office was grateful for the quick action and trying to keep it all in perspective. >> i'm hoping they're just slightly under the weather and a little rest, three-day weekend, should perk them up. >> how did you react when you heard about it? >> with

as robert handa shows us, the community stepped up and saved it. >> reporter: it's going to be cleanup time for quite a while at the rancho shopping center. at one time it was thought maybe the round hill studio had escaped major damage but it's turning out the overall structure is weak and may not be salvageable. but the dance studio owner is finding out community support is still strong. donna has owned round hill dance studio for 30 years. now said getting ready for a big 30th anniversary show on june 18th she finds herself cleaning up after the five-alarm fire. the fire ripped through the shop interesting. even though crews stopped flames short of the studio, there was major damage to the complex, including utility lines. the cause still under investigation. >> i'm thinking that we won't be able to continue our business here in this location. >> reporter: round hill studios annual "the maiden's visit" is a big south bay community event. some performers who starred in it at children now perform as adults. the fire took away her facilities for rehearsals and set production. >> when w
