let's discuss with former ambassador to saudi arabia, robert jordan.diplomat in residence at southern methodist university. thank you for coming back on our air. >> thank you, jim. >> so you heard khashoggi there more than a year ago saying that the trump administration was encouraging aggressive behavior, in his words, by saudi arabia. do you agree? >> i think there's some likelihood that this did encourage aggressive behavior. you can't simply go around saying that journalists are the enemy of the people and not have others around the world believe that. >> yeah. well, turkish investigatorers, they're saying there's a saudi intelligence officer, former diplomat, heplayed a pivotal role in this. he has some relationship with the crown prince, mohammed bin salman. knowing saudi arabia as you do, having served there for many years and the structure of the royal family there, of the leadership, is it possible, is it credible that someone at that level would carry out something like this without the knowledge of the crown prince? >> absolutely not. this c

ambassador to saudi arabia, robert jordan. ambassador, good do see you. look. this is tricky. president keeps on framing things when asked about whether he'll take action against saudi arabia if it is determined that it did something to contribute to the disappearance, possibly the murder, of jamal khashoggi and talking about $110 million arms deal. first of all, we only know that the saudis committed to $14.5 million and accept the fact they're among the biggest buyers of american military stuff. and the united states imports a lot of oil from saudi arabia. this is a complicated relationship that we have always had with saudi arabia. how do we start to extricate ourselves from it? >> well, i think we should already be able to be critical of those abuses. when i arrived in riyadh after 9/11 we had similar problems. we needed the saudis to help us fig fight fight and we were critical of the slowness of going after the terrorists. you can do both. i think we have got to be careful about exercising what's called dollar diplomacy meaning the dollar dictates what our policy is. tha

>> a brief time ago, i spoke as robert jordan, who served as ambassador to saudi arabia under presidentrge w. bush. the president now saying there will be severe consequences if saudi arabia is responsible for jamal khashogg''apparent death. what should those consequences e? >> i think we got to put these arms sales on pause. on that sayingld they sh be canceled, but i think we've got to take another look at all of the kinds of weapons -- i'm not should be cancele but i think we got to take a look at all the kinds of weapons we are offering. this is not an automatic grant of an excuse, so they've got to understand we ar quite serious about this. second, i think we need to make sure that nther kinds of cts for repair parts, supplies, and things of tt nature, are modulated. they need to understand that everything in terms of procuremenis on the table. they needur military hardware and weapons support at least as much, if not more, than wed n to sell to them. we are also providing reconnaissance, ammunition, and midair refueling in yemen -- i think that needs to be looked at. >> mikehi pom
