you know, recently president obama appointed a new secretary of veterans affairs, the honorable robert mcdonaldwith us today. secretary mcdonald is a 1975 graduate of the united states military academy at west point and an alumnus of the university of utah where he earned an mba, an army veteran and both airborne and ranger qualified he served with the 82nd airborne division. upon leaving military service, captain mcdonald was awarded the meritorious service medal. in 1980 secretary mcdonald joined procter & gamble, a fortune 50 company, and he rose through the ranks to become chief executive officer and president. he retired in june of 2013, nominated by president obama as the eighth secretary of veterans affairs on june 30th. he was confirmed by the united states senate on july 29th, 2014, and we are grateful to him for his service to our country and our veterans. please welcome secretary mcdonald. v., you know, robert and maureen o'donnell -- mcdonald, sorry, or vice versa, mcdonald v. u.s.the question is, how does that play out in the psyche or the consciousness of the american voter today? and i could give you sort of a other side of the coin. there's two new populisms going on in the united states. one is the tea party, the other is the left wing in the democratic party. senator from ohio and senator from massachusetts represent them. i invite your comments. what else is there out there that is happening that is illustrated or that you would interpret or comment on from these two phenomena, the new populisms, left, right, democrat, republican and the mcdonald conviction in richmond about two weeks ago. >> so about the mcdonalds, i would say that to the outside observer, cynical voter, the corruption that was disclosed there and that the jury decided was criminal behavior there really just ratifies what voters, many voters at least think is business as usual. i mean, i've always been struck -- peter, probably brody, john, you probably have as well -- by the degree many

it stems from the conduct of one of its officers in the ray mcdonald domestic violence case. as nbc bay area's robert handa reports, it could lead to changes with how police deal with the team. >> reporter: the san francisco 49ers employ a number of san jose police officers as offduty security on so-called secondary employment guidelines are followed. now the department's top cops are reviewing policies after finding out 49er ray mcdonald apparently called one of those security officers in the midst of the alleged domestic violence incident at his home august 31st. sources say that officer showed up and was not part of the unit called to the scene by a 911 call. >> the chief and his chief officers are reviewing that as we speak, and again, there's really no time table. >> reporter: the police department emphasizes it is not reviewing the secondary employment policies because the officer in the mcdonald situation did anything illegal or wrong necessarily, but is taking action mainly to avoid the perception of any favoritism and conflict of interest. >> we're held to a higher standard, so any form or a

robert honda broke the story at 6:00. officers in august responded to a domestic violence call at 49er ray mcdonald's house. when they got there, they found one of their own already there. that officer moonlights as 49er security detail and had apparently been called beforehand by mcdonald himself. the officer is now barred from working with the team pending the outcome of that probe. he's also among more than a dozen san jose police officers who work with the team. the department is now looking at possible changes to its off-duty work rules. >>> new tonight at 11:00, a high school principal at a prestigious local school has resigned. he was caught in a motel room filled with drugs. police say they found thomas price pictured here in a sacramento county motel room with cocaine, heroin, and meth. price was the principal at the private branson school in ross. that's in marin county. authorities also found 21-year-old brittany hall passed out in the 54-year-old's bed. hall, seen here, was also arrested in this drug investigation. police say hall's boyfriend tipped off police. >>> parents at a south bay element
