now it is my distinct honor and also a personal pleasure for me to introduce robert s. muller, the sixth director of the federal bureau of investigation. nominated by president george w. bush, he was sworn in to lead the fbi on september 4, 2001, just one week before the al qaeda attacks on 9/11. under his leadership, the fbi has since played the leading role in preventing further terrorist attacks inside america. all americans should be happy that congress recently approved an extension of his tenure -- his 10-year term for an additional two years. i have known bob since 1970, which was his first year as a law student at university of virginia where i was on the law school faculty. he was a returning veteran from the vietnam war, having led a rifle platoon in the third marine division, receiving a bronze star, purple heart, and vietnamese cross of gallantry. i was always on the lookout for incoming students who played squash. bob more than filled that bill. he improve my game, although i never, never beat the man. i did, however, get to know him very well. he was a prince. bo

our guest today is fbi director robert muller discussing security threats concerning the united states. we would like to ask you a little bit about the national security implications of our energy policy, an issue of much concern in the news and certainly here in silicon valley. what might you say about the relationship between energy policy and some of the national security challenges that the fbi is addressing? >> one of the nice things about my job is i generally stay away from policy, but when it comes to energy resources and the like, there are a number of -- you can look at it from the geopolitical perspective, which is not something that really bears on what we do day in and day out. if you put in context the potential cyber attacks and the concerns we have about cyber attacks on our infrastructure, there is an intersection between the vulnerabilities we have and our energy and electrical grids and the like from cyber attacks, which keep all of us busy. i would just go back to one other thing that i did not address in the question before, and that is the balance between privacy

i would love to see someone like robert muller or an individual like him in charge of the state department, because i think he would do a tremendous job. insofar as logistical entrenchment throughout the world, i think we still need to be located in many different locations. i think we need to be a little quieter, not so much to be on the military but more on the soft intelligence gathering. another thing i want to say, i assume our military leaders are doing this, but we need to reassess where our current troops are located. if they're in areas such as to japan and others where we may have 15,000 troops, do they still need to be there? can we deploy them elsewhere? or just reassess the whole situation and go from there. we need a new tactical and strategic approach to our military deployment and intelligence gathering and have strong leadership in the state department. after benghazi, i am disgusted. host: are you hopeful that this change of course can take shape or do you think the obama administration is set in its ways after four years, even though there are some changes in key posts?
