robert rea tweeted, disgraceful. implies focusing on corruption allows famine to go unchecked. npr's louisa lim said it's crude, tasteless, and comes off as pro murdoch on this side of the ocean, it seems like the united states is indeed investigating claims of news corp. repeatedly hacking one of its rivals. >>> joining me now, michael isikoff. michael, what is the latest in terms of the investigation that's going on here in the states? >> well, the new development is this company in new jersey, floor graphics, which is an advertising firm that does floor graphics for safeway and stores like that, had been a rival of news america, which was the advertising division of news corp. and back in 2003 and 2004, it discovered that its password protected computer system had been hacked and traced it to an ip address at news america, its competitor. they reported this to the fbi at the time, to the u.s. attorney's office, then headed by chris christie in new jersey, and the new jersey state police. nothing came of those. but these allegations were a central part of a lawsuit that floor graphics filed against news america, and that was settled with a $29 mill

murdoch made today. clearly, what happened at "the news of the world" and certainly the allegations of voice intercepts, is pretty horrific and abhorrent. >> as i said, robert's an apology without a confession. what does that mean? >> we've seen it in the states here so many times, mistake was made. we know exactly the way that the grammar that's used. here we have somewhat of an about the je object but no specificity to an apology. i didn't hear one. >> this is a multilevel scandal. this doesn't just involve news corporation. tomorrow an emergency session of the house of commons and the scandal is going to lap closer to david cameron on downing street. that big question continuing to haunt the british prime minister. why on earth did he hire a former "news of the world" editor andy coulson as his chief spokesman? i remember when that news broke i was stunned andy coulson was going into the heart of government. that raises a big question about the judgment of david cameron and then we've got the whole question about the police accepting payments from "news of the world," and news international journalists. most every institution is involved in this scandal.

robert maxwell? the man who committed suicide off his yacht because he sort of defrauded his media empire? you know, you have to remember, that is the background. now, mr. murdoch is a very astute player. many say that his move by closing the "news of the world" is bold and brave. >> louise, i will have to interrupt you there for a moment, i'm afraid. woe just got the prime minister, david cameron, just about to address newsmenme mennewsmen. let's listen in. >> families who lost loved ones, sometimes defending our country, that these people could have had their phones hacked into in order to generate stories for a newspaper is simply disgusting. i cannot think what was going through the minds of the people who did this. that they can hack into anyone's phone is disgraceful. but to hack into the phone of millie dowder, a young kirl missing from her parents who was later found to be murdered, is truly despicable. but this scandal is not just about some journalists on one newspaper. it's not even just about the press. it's also about the police, and, yes, it's about how politics works and about politicians, too. i want to be very frank about how, as a country, we
