we're joined once again by the sundance founder, robert redford.ye the acclaimed oscar winning director, actor, environmentalist. welcome back to democracy now! it is great to have you with us. we're going to jump into it. just a week ago, the senate refused to formally acknowledge the existence of human induced climate change. 49 republicans voted against the measure, noting human activity significantly contributes to climate change. they voted no. your response? >> that is no surprise. i think it is pretty obvious what is going on. i think deniers of climate change are probably people who are afraid of change. they don't want to see change. they want to hang on -- they want to hang on to the way things were. my feeling about the deniers and a lot of other issues out there is, too many in congress are pushing us back to the 1950's. that is what it feels like. they're pushing us back in time rather than forward in time. why? maybe they are afraid of not being able to be included. i don't know what it is. it is kind of sad because they're so polariz

to take you to the sundance film festival in park city utah where stephanie elam sat down with robert redfordhas evolved and talked about his new film "a walk in the woods." cnn is the only one to get a sit down with redford at the festival. tell us more. >> reporter: you probably have the best weather here in park city. it's crowded. a lot of people here and a lot of buzz about the festival obviously. in talking to robert redford about what the festival has turned into was an interesting chat. also talking about a"a walk in the woods" and who he envisioned he would originally do the film with. take a listen. when you look at the festival now, is it what you thought it would be when you began it? >> no. no. you don't think about the end result. at least i don't. that involves expectations. i don't believe in expectations. i think expectations are dangerous. i try to avoid expecting anything. you just are in the moment as it happens and you begin with hope because that's all you've got. nothing has happened yet. >> it has its own energy and own breath when you come to sundance sundance. >> let

what's interesting about some of these movies here is that in the opening day ceremony if you will robert redfordression in these days post-"charlie hebdo" and ability to talk about things that are upsetting to people. this is what he had to say. >> we believe in diversity and freedom of expression is fundamental to us and that's evidence in the film. you see films here that will upset other people and that's okay. it's diversity. it is showing what there is out there. i think freedom of expression seems to be in danger in a lot of areas but as far as we're concerned, we will do everything in our power to keep it alive here. >> reporter: one thing else redford mentioned, is he see documentaries as an important form of expression and sees it as long form journalism and wanted that to be a highlight at the sundance film festival when he created it many years ago so it's an important way to express things that need a highlight and that can be discussed and get people talking about it even more carol. >> happy birthday stephanie elam. >> reporter: it's not a bad place to be for your birthday is it? t

if you listen to robert redford, he said this is something that needs to be highlighted, things thate us uncomfortable but expand our horizons. one of the films is "3 1/2 minutes" which looks at what went on from the moment jordan davis was shot and how that trial played out and how it affected the parties related to the story. we are going to speak to the parents of jordan davis who will be here to look at the movie as well. another movie that is also stirring the pot a bit is a movie called eded "cronies." it comes from a former student at the nyu film school. it looks at relationships that change over time. it's very much within the conversation of what we see in light of ferguson last year. the other movie that also has people talking is "going clear." that movie is taking a look at the church of scientology and looking into it. something everyone is wondering how they will do this and wondering how many lawyers they had look at the film before it actually debuts here. the trick to scientology is not very friendly to people looking at their organization. we are expected to speak
