robert rowland with a warm j hawk welcome. a little bit warmer than that. >> dr. rowland, it's a pleasure to be with you tonight. thank you for being here at the dole institute. >> and it's always great to be at the dole institute. >> so let's get started with our conversation. you studied president reagan as a scholar for many decades, but when did you first take note as ronald reagan's as a contemporary political observer? >> i did that when i was a young faculty member at baylor, i had bought into all the stereotypes reagan was a far right idelog and an actor. i was also a debate coach at the time and i looked at the reagan-carter debate in 1980. there was asi single debate in that cycle. in the second half of the debate they had two rebuttals so you stated your case and then the other side had a chance to state their case, and then you responded. and i noticed immediately as i was going through the transcript that reagan was much better in the rebuttals. he was good, he was always good. but he was much better in the rebuttals. and carter was terrible. and i the
