. >>> and from the weather desk, here's robert speta. robert? >> hi there. i first want to start off talking about europe here and northern italy where a earthquake took place on earlier today. i'll show you video coming out of amelia in northern italy here. this is just nine days after a 5.9 magnitude quake hit the area and actually killed seven people and killed massive damage. now, today's earthquake was a 5.8 magnitude. once again, the epicenter was in emilia. several people have reportedly died. you can see here the buildings which have collapsed, firefighters going around helping out the aftermath here and picking up the broken pieces. let's pull back the picture, because least for the forecast here it does look like the weather will be relatively good. clear skies will be dominating the area throughout the rest of tuesday going into wednesday. on thursday, then into friday, afternoon rain showers will top up here. but it doesn't look like it should be damaging the recovery effort too much. there is a cold front off here towards the north, that's pushi

robert speta is here with the update for here and elsewhere. robert?> we did see some thunderstorms activity earlier today. now it is moving off towards the east bringing some severe weather towards eastern portions of honshu in your monday evening. and unfortunately there has been one report of death now due to lightning strike out here. remember if you hear thunder outside, it could bring the risk of lightning with it, which could be very dangerous. i want to show you a picture from earlier today this is out of tokyo, actually. one of the leading enl ining e storms here, the rainfall with the gusts ahead of it. this is where you see the i haddest highest winds. going into tuesday, some unstable weather will continue to linger here in eastern honshu. this could be popping up some severe thunderstorms into the afternooning and & evening hours. to the west, high pressure starting to work its way in from the west, bringing some fairer weather with it. meanwhile, here in central china, you are seeing heavy rainfall, up to 200 millimeters could fall to the

for the outlook, robert speta from the weather team. robert? >> it does look like more cloudy skies and rain showers are going to be on tap going into wednesday, though. an area of low pressure is running across the east china sea here, gaining strength while it is on its way off towards the east. and already here in some of the prefectures along the eastern seaboard of japan, you'll have seen upwards of 140 millimeters of rainfall in the past 24 hours. down here towards the south, up to 72 millimeters of rainfall fell in just one hour earlier this evening. thunderstorms blew through there. now all the energy is starting to work its way off to the northeast, bringing heavy rainfall and the risk of flooding, specifically along the eastern seaboard here in the kanto plain and toward the key prefecture, you'll be seeing your heaviest amounts of rain, up to 120 millimeters here into the next 48 hours could fall. this brings the risk of flooding and also the landslides and some steeper elevations, especially along the eastern seaboard here. this bri

robert speta has the details. robert? >> there is a tropical depression east of isais right now.he cyclonic circulation forming up here as it does push off towards the northwest. and with that, you're going to be expecting some further intensification. the japan meteorological agency here, the official forecasting agency out in the western pacific for tropical systems, is expecting this to go up to a tropical storm within the next 24 hours. with this is going to be bringing is a threat of some heavy rainfall across most of the philippines here. you see areas in reds, those are indicating up to about 100 millimeters in the next 24 hours. and already in manila, you're seeing some flooding reports due to some of these bands pushing into the center of the circulation. not only the floods, but then what comes with that is the risk of landslides on some of the steeper elevations. we'll keep you posted as the system does continue to develop through the next several days. look off here towards the north, southern japanese islands, all that area is in red. this is due to a separate system

robert speta has the latest on the weather forecast for here and elsewhere. robert?> sunny skies are on tap for most of japan. after all those rain showers did move through the country on your tuesday here, even still some thunderstorms lingering across the southern japanese islands, going into wednesday. and also off towards hokkaido, an upper level disturbance continuing to linger here. an additional 80 millimeters of rainfall could fall here. but for the rest of japan, high pressure is ridging in from the west, some sunny skies are going to be accompanied by temperatures into the high 20s for you there in tokyo. now, did mention the thunderstorms down here towards the southern portions of the japanese islands. this is all to the frontal area that is continuing to linger. this is a rainy season stationary front. will bring more rainfall, not only towards the southern japanese islands, taiwan and also southeastern china including hong kong here, you're going to be expecting some thunderstorm activity through the remainder of your workweek. now, south of this front,

for the forecast, robert speta fills us in for the details. robert? >> a rainy day out across japan. the low pressure pushes in, and already in the tokai region. you've seen your rain totals go higher throughout the day and now it's a all the way up to nearly 500 millimeters of rainfall in just the past 24 hours. unfortunately as this energy does continue to push off towards the northeast, with it is the threat of yet more rainfall. another 250 millimeters could fall here in the tokkai region and even out to the tako plain you can see the excessive amount of rain. and an additional 200 meters could be seen here. it brings a threat of floods but also a risk of land slides in these steeper elevations. not only will the rains be the risky scenario, the winds up to 72 kilometers per hour could be seen in these lines close together here. these are winds pushing onshore and accompanying this is going to be high seas, up to 5 to 7 meters in some locations. if you do plan on vent turg out to any of the beaches, it could be rather dangerous. farther toward the

robert speta has the weather for here and elsewhere. robert? >> wet and windy conditions on tap for your rest of your monday and then going into tuesday across most of japan here as an area of low pressure does push out of eastern china and already into western portions of japan and also the southern portions of the korean peninsula. you have been seeing some wet weather throughout your day and going into tuesday, this whole frontal system is expected to push off towards the northeast, so wet weather expected across most of the japanese islands throughout the day on tuesday. this will be sure to have your umbrellas ready, but good news on wednesday, high pressure will start to bridge back in from the west, bringing some fair weather starting by wednesday morning, down there towards the western portions of the japanese islands. now, farther out here towards the west in the southeastern portions of china, you've been see something copious amount of rain due to the rainy season stationary front that has been continuing to linger here. and what thi

robert speta has the forecast for here and elsewhere. robert? >> well it does look like thunderstorms will be on tap for tokyo, going in here until friday. actually in portions of western japan today, you saw some hail in a couple of -- and thunderstorms and frequent lightning, but now as all of this instability pushes off to the east, much fairer weather will be setting into western japan. unfortunately throughout much of the day on friday, thunderstorms continue to pop up here in eastern japan, including tokyo and also off towards hokkaido. farther down towards the south, we have the stationary boundary that is lingering over taiwan here. and into the past 24 hours, in portions of southern taiwan, you saw upwards of 247 millimeters now of rainfall. this is contributing to the potential of some flash floods and landslides here and even the threat continues to persist in southeastern china. does look like the rain will start to become lighter going into the weekend. but unfortunately this entire area has already been devastated by floods for abo

here's robert speta. >> much more favorable weather across most of japan. down to the south, you are seeing heavy rainfall. this is due to a frontal boundary pushing in from the west. and actually in okinawa, you can see up to 150 millimeters in the next 24 hours. accompanied by lightning, and even gusty winds here. this is all due to the stationary boundary, even extending out to southeastern china. already, you have been seeing widespread flooding here. into the next 24 hours, it looks like another 100 millimeters will fall in many locations, 13esh8 especially down to the coastline. in towards thailand, short-time heavy rain showers, bringing the threat of thunderstorms, and even a risk of flooding. also, the risk of flooding here in eastern lu san. see this big red l here? this is a developing low pressure area. it does look like it's going to be continuing to move off to the northwest. it could be bringing flooding, even land slides. looking at temperatures in manila, at 33. shanghai at 24. as well as in seoul and tokyo, you're looking at a high of 33.
