let's bring in robert speta. we just had a powerful storm last week. how bad will this be? >> this does not look like as strong as last week but hitting a coast line which is much more vulnerable to the tropical systems. it is extending out towards the capital. this is our tropical storm. it is still pushing off towards the west. we are starting to see intensification out of this and will likely be intensifying to a typhoon just prior to landfall by tuesday afternoon. winds 108 gusting up to 162 kilometers per hour. that is enough to cause damage and definitely light buildings you could be seeing some of those really taking significant damage out of this. i think the bigger threat as this pushes out over the philippines is the rainfall. even extending towards manila you could see 200 to 300 millimeters. this could result to landslides in the mountains. it is going to be a stand still as we look ahead to tuesday evening and wednesday. if you are being warned you want to take proper precautions before things start to clear out. after it pushes over the philippines it is still

our meteorologist robert speta joins me now. robert, i understand southern china is also putting typhoon warnings in place. what is the latest? >> yes, shery. this storm system still very serious. it is packing some very strong typhoon strength winds out here. now approaching hainan island, expecting to make landfall by friday afternoon. but before that happens, or before that happened, this storm system did roll across the southern philippines and brought these very damaging winds out here. not just the winds, but also the rainfall. first starting over here toward southern portions of lawsen, tracking across much of the country and impacting the metro manila area where we have video coming out of the cleanup efforts here today. the good news is that the weather has dramatically improved, but still a lot to pick up here. also there has been many reports of deaths, 38 at this time. many people are still missing out here. at one point, see all the downed trees, about 85% of the city lost power in manila. government offices were shu

our meteorologist robert speta joins me now. robert, the last typhoon to hit the country back in november, quite devastating. how severe will this one be? >> the good news, it's not as strong as typhoon haiyan back in november. but this one is still packing some damaging winds, heavy rainfall, and even a threat of storm surge coming out of it so people along these immediate coastal areas where this storm system is making landfall definitely taking this very seriously. take a look at the latest visible satellite imagery. and this really gives you that definition of this storm system. it has rapidly intensified over the past several hours. a very clear and defined eye wall around that center of circulation. now to be moving onshore in southern luzon, rate into the city of lagaspi, an area that is prone to storm surge. i think these coastal communities are going to be the highest threat, one to two meter sea level rise as this does come onshore. definitely along with that, 144 gusts up to 198 kilometer per hour winds. that could cau

meteorologist robert speta joins me now. robert, so how serious is the situation? >> well, shery, at this time, across parts of central and eastern china, it is actually rather serious out here. we'll talk about flooding and risk of landslides in a few areas. and then heading over to japan, the showers are coming down. we'll talk more on that in a second. first, video out of eastern china where we have been seeing significant flooding. you see right off the bat here, we have showers coming down, flooding on the roads. this all occurred here on tuesday. the storms brought hail, high floodwaters, and firefighters had to rescue people stranded on a hillside here as well. the waters became too powerful to cross in one area. landslides and overturned vehicles were a common sight in some locations. and water logging continues to be a problem in some urban areas. so this is still going to be a problem as we look ahead into the forecast. additional 50 to 100 millimeters could occur across the river basin, some areas as much as 130 millimeters. that same low tracking to the

. >>> let's now bring in our meteorologist, robert speta, for a check of the weather. rt, that typhoon that hit the philippines this week now headed towards china. what should people there expect? >> yes, shery, out here into northern portions of hainan, in southern portions of guangdong, at this time, should be expecting very gusty winds. we have seen this storm system already come on shore out here. about 40,000 people have been told to evacuate ahead of it. anybody that is currently being impacted by this, especially in northern hainan, a large city of about 830,000 people in haikou there at this time are definitely seeing typhoon-strength winds, 140 kilometers per hour, likely much higher than that. gusts are estimated around the center of circulation to be 230 to 235 kilometers per hour. this could cause widespread power outages, flying debris as well, and not just that, but also the heavy rainfall. this is the latest visible satellite imagery. a really circular eye forms in here, and that is clear and indicative of a strengthening and a very strong typhoon. so, we

meteorologist robert speta has more. >> we have been saying the last several days now these very dry conditions. you have gusty winds coming with this as well and it has been fueling up these fires. we have a video coming out of northern california to show you what it looks like on the ground here with some of these fires. firefighters in this area have made some progress on this one particular blaze. on sunday the wildfires forced the evacuation of hundreds of residents. in a rural area near sacramento. the blaze broke out on fri burning more than 15 square kilometers and destroying 13 residences. dry conditions are still in place in this area for the next several days due to this big ridge in the jet stream under the high pressure dominating to the north and also very warm and dry conditions. now conversely, this is in the nonsds and you have to remember and this ridge is in the upper atmosphere, well above our he but on the lower levels you get the surface heating in the desert out here. that creates what we call a heat low and it's been drawing in moisture from the west and kicki

let's talk to our meteorologist robert speta. a holiday weekend there. lots of peoples plans must be spoiled by the awful weather. >> unfortunately here on friday if anybody does have plans for their fourth of july weekend up and down the eastern seaboards of the u.s. it will very likely be rather sour. we have our hurricane now, hurricane arthur, the strongest storm to make landfall there in the united states since 2008. moving over the cape right now on thursday night into friday morning and it's been bringing foul weather. actually have some video coming out of this area earlier on thursday before it started to come onshore. you can see those dark clouds in the skies as it pushes overhead. one person out there trying to get into some of those rough waves. that's not a smart thing to do as we head over through friday because very dangerous rip currents along with this, high surf up and down the eastern sea boards and that's one of the main problems as we look ahead through the next 24 hours. mandatory evacuations for the cape. low lying area in eastern
