. >>> it's time now to get a check of the weather with meteorologist robert speta. robert, good morning. a powerful cyclonic storm is impacting yemen. you talked about this yesterday. the situation seems quite serious. what's the latest? >> yes, this is a very serious storm system, and already a deadly storm system. actually, on the island of sokatra, part of yemen to the southeast. at least three casualties have been reported out of here after that storm blew by here on your monday. and it just pushed that outer eye wall right over the head of the island. now this is coming on shore just towards the southwest of al mukalla, and this is going to be devastating mainly because of the rainfall. very rare to have a cyclone make landfall this far west there, the gulf of aden. definitely, this is a rare satellite picture. wind speeds right now 157 kilometers per hour sustained, but really, the biggest issue with this is going to be the rain. i actually want to show you this graphic. this is the annual rain totals across this area here. and you will typically see for the en

meteorologist robert speta joins us with details. this is our latest storm system here.ed barney by the meteorological office out of the uk. what we are looking at is several storm systems. this is not barney. this is our previous one which is bringing fairly gusty winds. towards iceland you have wind reports upward of 122 kilometers per hour. this area of cloud cover coming from the west. you can see it on the side of the satellite picture. that is our next storm system. as it does push overhead heading into tuesday, going to bring in blustery conditions. the big difference from this one to the last several storms. abigail pushed through the northern areas of the british isles. this one is coming in farther towards the south. even those of you into london you can see blustery conditions coming out of this. more so along the western seaboard where the highest winds will be in the heaviest rainfall. we could look at snowfall up to 10 centimeters. definitely if you have travel plans, you want to watch off that. in the south, fairly decent weather. lisbon at 20. athens gett

meteorologist robert speta joins us with details. >> what we're seeing how here today is actually thestorm system extending from italy over toward the balkan peninsula and really the winds are stirring up. up ward to 87 kph. we've got cold air sing -- sinking in from the mountains from the north. those are the winds we're talking about here. it's a very rough day at the very least for a lot of people. over toward rome, about an hour delay for flights on average because of that severe winds and also some of the snowfall there in the higher elevations. all this is shifting farther off toward the east. parts of greece, into western areas of turkey, that's where we see the severe weather as we go ahead through the next 24 hours. chance of heavy rainfall and lightning coming out of these stronger thunder cells plus the snowfall in higher elevation for you. that's really the severe weather threat toward the south but off toward the north we have this cold front moving through the british isles. london, you are looking at a cooldown. you might be looking for a rain and rain-snow mix, but tem

meteorologist robert speta tells us what is ahead in world weather. >> we are looking across much of japan is high pressure really making for a much fairer weather. we have showers to the west there. that is just the leading edge of a new storm system developing in out of southeastern china. we have this area of low pressure. you can see the cloud cover stretching across the region nice 24 hours you can see an additional millimeters. and it does continue heading into the weekend going to be working its way towards -- and into saturday and sunday across the tokyo area. i want toenti mention maybe snol pretty widespread across much of northern japan heading into latter part of the weekend. so something to look forward to. partly cloudy skies. down towards the south showers across much of china. still into the mid 30s into the tropics towards bangkok. 34 on your thursday. let's look towards the south specifically across southeastern australia. we have going on the developing low pressure already bringing rain showers and thunderstorms out here and it does look like it is going to contin

meteorologist robert speta joins us with the forecast. >> let's talk about this travel week. it's going to be a rough one from the rockies across the central plains. pay attention to this forecast here. this past weekend much of the eastern u.s., thanks to this area of low pressure, see that cloud cover is now moving off to the east. it brought in this absolutely chilly cold air and some snowfall accompanying with this. an early season snow in cleveland, ohio. also towards chicago. really just slowing down people out on the roadways here. numerous delays and cancellations at the airport. this high pressure is making things dry right now. back towards the west, this is the storm system to watch. specifically across the northern rockies for the time being, you are going to look at additional snowfall, some areas as much as 20 to 30 centimeters expected out there. high winds. some areas as much as 70 to 80 kilometers per hour. take a look at the three-day outlook. you are going to look at a high of only 6 tuesday. it's going to get colder to minus 6 and minus 8 by wednesday and

meteorologist robert speta joins us with more. >> i want to start off talking about this. it's not anything that is dramatic as far as we see with flooding and tornadoes, for example, but the impacts are widespread. that is a drought out here since last summer in 2014 to 2015 across the southern areas here in africa and specifically south africa. you have been seeing already so far going into the summer water restrictions in place for those of you in johannesburg. crops have been damaged. i want to show you photos. this is in new castle. a lot of these lake beds drying up. a lot of rivers running dry. water shortage is definitely a key issue. one of the other effects of that because you are looking at a shortage of rainfall and water is the threat to a lot of crops. farmers having a hard time going ahead with this. in 2014 and 2015 alone about a third of the maize crops were lost. it's a very serious situation and really being exasperated by the el nino which is causing a difference in the weather patterns. we have jet stream dipping. you are looking at less rainfall there

meteorologist robert speta joins us with the latest. >> this storm system we have been tracking all week really has been a messy situation out here for many people starting from the rockies. we saw widespread snowfall and then texas, oklahoma, numerous reports of tornadoes out here and then towards iowa. all of this is continuing to shift towards the east. across the eastern seaboard as we go ahead through your thursday you are seeing heavy rain especially towards the south the risk of flash flooding and the chance of severe thunderstorms possibility of tornado or two coming out of this. also, you are looking back towards the north. coming around the western periphery we have a tight pressure gradient. also the snowfall. some areas of ontario see 20 centimeters of snow and heavy snow and blowing snow warnings in effect across the area. so reducing visibility. traveling is going to be a slow go on the roads and at the airports. back towards the west i want to make note we have the very blustery conditions continuing to stream on shore in the pacific northwest actually in washington two re

. >>> it is time for a check of the weather with our meteorologist robert speta.esidents along mexico are preparing for stormy weather. >> this is very active tropical season in the eastern pacific. the 26th named storm system of the year and the 11th major hurricane to be had just off the coast line of mexico. an eye really starting to become more defined in the last several frames there. winds right now 185 kilometers per hour sustained pressure down to 967. one thing i want to note this is going to continue to intensify. it should weaken before it comes on shore in baja, california. if it does make landfall as a tropical storm the latest landfalling tropical system in mexico in recorded history. why is it so active this year? and one of the big causes is elnonino. what happens with the effect of elin ne el nino. you have the path which you have the cold water. when we get trade winds a little laxed it brings warm water towards the east. that enhances the effects of the tropical system and brings up more major hurricanes. that is why we have record breaking amou

meteorologist robert speta has the latest. >> as we go through the next 24 hours all this precipitation that is coming in across the western areas of japan it is pushing towards the northeast. so right now you have this cloud cover over head and in tokyo it does look like decent weather here. as we go ahead into the afternoon and evening hours most of this heavy precipitation will start to work its way towards the northeast. in the past 24 hours since tuesday afternoon we did see upwards of 140 millimeters reported here in one area in just a three-hour span over 100 millimeters reported in the same location. that is really interesting to us that some of the showers have the short time heavy rains with the thunderstorms. as we go out into the evening hours tokyo, as well. we are looking at the heavy showers moving through. by thursday morning's commute you are going to be wanting to have an umbrella with you at the least. hopefully this is out of there by lunch time as high pressure starts to work its way from the north. the high keeping things on the cold side there in northeastern chin

. >>> it is time now for a check of the weather with our meteorologist robert speta. it is a cold morning in tokyo and the skies are looking pretty gray. what's going on? >> let's start off here in japan because what we have going on at this time it is cloud cover over most of the country. you can see it on the satellite picture. we have one area of low pressure towards the east. i know during early morning hours things cleared up for a little bit here on wednesday. we have another coming in from the west bringing another round of widespread precipitation. already in the overnight hours. i know a lot of people are bundling up. it is rather chilly. we had snowfall across parts of central japan. 48 centimeters came down in just a 24-hour period across this region. i want to make note on the satellite picture you see areas in the cloud cover moving from the northwest towards the southeast. that is our sea effect snow. one of the big snow makers. when you get the cold air coming in out of siberia it moves across the sea of japan and picks up moisture and dumps it on the j

meteorologist robert speta has the latest. >> this is starting to pull away from the country. we are still looking at a few lingering showers. a lot of you monday did have your umbrellas with you. i wouldn't put them away yet. we are looking at cooler air spilling in from the north. farther towards the north across parts of hokkaido, we are seeing the white stuff come down. 15 to 20 centimeters. definitely good news for those of you. behind it, sunny skies setting in across much of north eastern china towards the korean peninsula. that will make for fairly decent weather the next several days. unfortunately with that we are looking at this cool air coming in out of russia. only a high of 1 there. that's chilly for you. beijing with a high of 9, cloudy skies. seoul at 14. tokyo getting up to 21. we do have those rain showers in the forecast. down towards the south in the tropics, afternoon showers pop pg up for those in bangkok with a high of 34. towards europe, high pressure is dominating the south across the mediterranean. this is fairly good news for those of you specificall

meteorologist robert speta has the details. >> yes, it is a rather blustery day across much of the british isles, for that matter. what we're looking at here into the forecast is still these very windy conditions. i know at least at this time many airports have been dhaed. and a big reason for this is the strong cross-winds that are really coming in across much of ireland, over toward scotland as well. when you get that happening it's rather hard for a lot of these planes to land. about a 30-minute delay of many of these airports. at the very least going on across this area. a lot of schools have been canceled. actually across the north there has been wind reports, 90 to 100 kilometers per hour out here. those are reports and you still could be seeing winds higher than that. our storm's back here toward the north, the center of low pressure, but we have this cold front extending south that brought rain showers and thunderstorms. the tight pressure gradient which has set and up specifically the closer we get to that low the higher the winds are. in some areas, take a look at this, 150 kilom
