our meteorologist robert speta joins us with the latest. >> this is all a result of this depression, a tropical low that's been spinning across the area, now slowly tracking off towards the north. you can see it really on the satellite picture, just continuing to swirl through this area. all right we have been seeing some fairly heavy rainfall reports. in just the past three days, some areas out here nearly 300 millimeters, but in the past week from the 9th through the 16th, upwards of 7 to 800 millimeters fell here, and definitely very serious situation for a lot of people. first, i'll show you out of sri lanka here, further down toward the south, you can take a look at this, the severe flooding that was taking place, 114 homes have been destroyed. we are seeing very heavy rainfall still heading into wednesday morning definitely affecting traffic rather badly. the good news, if there is any shining light coming out of this, it is bringing some relief to the heat that's been dominating much of this area. so far this pre-monsoonal season we've seen a significant heat wave. so this doe

it's time for a check of the weather with robert speta. it was pouring rain. the weather has improved. what happened? >> the weather improved quickly even back towards the west as well. with have our storm system racing off toward the northeast. the big thing is it has a strong upper level jet associated with it. it's been fueling it up, making it for rather potent storm. the good news, that's also enhancing it moving rather fast. we did see roughwet r out here on tuesday and also over towards wednesday morning. we had a report of a water spout just off the coastline. high winds into the korean peninsula. over 150 kilometers per hour. it's been windy and heavy rain. let's show you video. this is what we're talking about here into the morning. you mentioned that walking into work it was a rough one. a lot of us had to deal with this this morning. you see people caught off guard. winds picking up across most of tokyo along with the heavy rainfall throughout the morning hours. also we have seen numerous train delays in suspension of one line earlier on this morni

robert speta will stel us whether this will last through the weekend. >> yes. sunny skies really dominated most of japan today. we have a big area of high pressure, it has moved in. clear conditions out there, temperatures definitely on the rise, feeling summer-like for a lot of you across much of the area. something that is kind of contributing to the warmer temperatures, this area of low pressure back toward theest. out ahead of it we have the southerly winds coming in. that is bringing some precipitation across northeastern china, but this is one other thing i want to know. a tight pressure gradient, and out of mongolia over towards western china, you have the gobbi desert, the winds kicked up and it's bringing yellow sand. i'll show you some video coming out of this area. definitely a significant reduced visibility here in northwestern china on wednesday. traffic actually halted in some areas, as visibility dropped to less than 50 meters. that is just absolutely incredible. the air is just getting filled with the sand out here. definitely poor air quality.

our meteorologist robert speta joins us with the latest. >> in fact temperatures have dropped a good five, six degrees in the tokyo area, as we go through your wednesday afternoon. take a look at the satellite picture, this cloud cover dominated down through kyushu. blocking on the the sun. we are lacking in the strong southerly winters today, so it is feeling much cooler. unfortunately this does come with some precipitation, and really heavy stuff back towards the west. we're seeing thunderstorms in kyushu, extending down through the japanese islands here. also some fairly gusty winds. you have that tight pressure grade gradient setting up there, with the winds up to about 79 kilometers, coming in along the western seaboards, including thof of you in sapporo. tokyo will be missing out on this precipitation, at least until friday, but you are continuing to deal with the cloudy skies, so that will keep things on the average side. also back there toward the west into the ise-shima regions, a lo lot of eyes are on this area because of the g7 summit taking place on thursday and friday. a
