. >> roberta gonzales is in san francisco with a look at the storm heading our way. in the south, uhm -- you're actually in san francisco, roberta. it's calm now. but it's going to be worse tomorrow. >> reporter: it definitely is the calm before the storm, michelle. we have cloud cover right now. but let's get right to our hi- def doppler radar where we're picking up the very first returns light to moderate rain showers right there off the north sonoma coast. this is what the storm looks like. it's the first look we have had of it as it approaches the bay area. and because of the potentially dangerous situation all associated with and surrounding this storm, we have a high wind warning in effect for tonight through tomorrow for just about the entire bay area. 50-mile-an-hour gusts expected at the urban level. 70-mile-an-hour gusts in the highest elevations. a flash flood watch is in effect in the bay area in addition to a high surf advisory. so those are the advisories, watches and warnings you need to know about now. more coming up later on in this newscast, michelle

but we begin with roberta gonzales in the weather center. how's it looking? >> many people are saying what storm? you have not heard the raindrops on your rooftops as of yet but let's do it, let's fire up our hi-def doppler radar. green is the light precipitation. yellow indicates moderate precipitation. and the orange and purples, that's not good news. let's zero in on the north bay where the action is this morning. we have a combination of the light to moderate to heavy rainfall. check out 101 morning commute already. we zero in on berkeley now because we're now beginning to see this precipitation move east into the eastern portion of our bay area. look at this. 101 between novato and marinwood, this isn't good news. this is where we had saturated soil last week up to 5" rain accumulated in novato over two days. we are expecting big totals there again today. now, here's the deal. we have a high wind warning in effect right now all the by through 10 p.m. tonight. winds 35 miles per hour. gusts in excess of 50 miles per hour. that's for the entire bay area. b

roberta gonzales is in the weather center tracking the storm on our hi-def doppler radar. kiet do is in san jose where streets are flooding and ryan takeo is in san francisco where cars are submerged. ryan. >> reporter: just in the last half-hour we have seen city crews go ahead and they have dumped or taken all the water out vacuumed it all up basically and right now waiting for tow trucks. one of the drivers who was in one of the vehicles, let's bring you over here right now. basically what happened around 4:00? >> it was raining very hard a lot of lightning, a lot going on, on the freeway. so i tried to get off to avoid it and winded up in bigger trouble than i thought, you know, just drive. >> reporter: you were just explaining to the tow truck company right now, this wasn't a puddle. >> not at all. not at all. as soon as i opened the door the vehicle was totally submerged. i had to, you know, basically swim through the water a little over waist deep to get through it. >> reporter: let's take a step back. how high was the water? >> basically about right about to my bel

roberta gonzales joins us. the storm not done just yet. >> it's still raining. it's our hi-def doppler radar. it's picking up lots of returns in the form of moderate to heavy rainfall from the pacific ocean moving east. this is unstable air behind the frontal boundary sparking heavy downpours. right now just outside of the fremont area, also along highway 238. if we go upstream a little bit we see more heavy activity there outside of richmond and el sobrante. the green is lighter rain falling. moderate rainfall outside dillon beach and it's lifting north out towards petaluma. because of all the moderate and heavy rain, the national weather service has issued a flood advisory for seven out of nine of our san francisco bay area counties. we'll talk about when the rain is going to end. michelle, frank, that's still straight ahead. >>> the powerful storm caused major damage to a grocery store in east san jose. the view from above shows two large holes in the store's roof, which gave way during yesterday's downpour. kpix 5's keit do is live at the safeway on east cap

roberta gonzales has the forecast. >> we have our "eye on the storm." look at the colors on the screen an intensifying area of low pressure right now. we also as we zoom in, into our own local bay area, see that we have lots of little cells that pop up especially around the north bay. the rain is moving in and we already have a flood advisory in effect for marin county. it's seen up to 4" of rain in the past 36 hours. that on top of the two inches of rain that's moving in with this system here. we'll keep an "eye on the storm." >>> the latest round of rain is causing some flooding in southern marin county. business owners were shocked to find water when they went to work today. a marsh area in tiburon was overwhelmed by runoff from a hillside causing excess water to spill across tiburon boulevard which is the main road in town. some businesses across from town hall were flooded, as well. after weather like last week's storm, business owners say today's flooding was very unexpected. the weather is causing two-hour days at sfo right now. 48 flights have b

[overlapping speakers >> reporter: the river has just hit flood stage -- [ pause ] >> reporter: yes. the russian river has just hit flood stage which is 32 feet. so we are watching it rise slowly here just started raining again in guerneville. i'm near downtown guerneville. take a look at some of the shots that we got yesterday when the flooding had already begun in some low-lying areas. this is something that they are used to here in guerneville. it happens once about every 10 years. last time it was this high was a couple of years ago. but, you know, it is a little early in the season. we are waiting for the river to rise further now because more water is still coming from some of the tributaries and it's ending up in the river which , and it's going to be 35 feet which is three

. >>> roberta gonzales has been getting ready for the storm in the weather center. it moves in late tonight. roberta, this is the big one, isn't it? >> yes, it is. within 24 hours you usually start to see a storm either divert to the north or to the south or begin to fall apart. this one is just fully intact. it is getting stronger. it is not backing down. and even if we only get half of what we are forecasting at this particular time, we will have some flooding. we will have some gusty winds that will be damaging right here in the bay area. it's our hi-def doppler radar and right now, we have nothing on the screen but upstream is where we see the full development of this area of low pressure. it's becoming more intense as the hours tick by. so this is what you need to know. we have a high wind warning in effect tonight through thursday night. the winds will be an excess of 70 miles per hour in the highest elevations generally speaking in the urban areas up to 35-mile-per-hour wind gusts. we have a flash flood watch in effect for about the entire bay area. in additio

but first roberta gonzales is in the weather center. >> it's easy to see where the storm is when we call in our hi- def doppler radar. good morning, everybody. we have a multiple spread of colors out there right now anywhere from yellow to green to orange. the green is light rain, yellow moderate and right there heavy rainfall occurring in the mill valley area, up and down highway 101. the green is now going east trying to move into the eastern portion of our bay area but for the most part it's been a north bay event all morning long from novato to black point. so the morning commute out of the north bay is going to be hazardous. damaging winds, as well. so far i have been clocking winds up to 40 miles per hour in some portions. urban areas of the north bay. these damaging winds are likely all the way through about 9:00 in the northern portion of our bay area. but throughout the entire region, today alone. in addition we have a flash flood watch in effect today. we'll see flooding on roads and ponding on sidewalks. we have a high surf advisory throughout the entire coast of the state of

but we begin with roberta gonzales in the weather center. how are we looking right now, roberta? >> we are having very heavy rain and gusty winds across the northern portion of the bay area. good morning, everybody. we have our "eye on the storm" and we have our hi-def doppler radar, check this out right now. when you see the green that's light rainfall. yellow is moderate. the pockets of orange is a heavy downpour. we don't want to see any purple. that's usually thunderstorms or one inch of rain falling per hour. right now impacted highway 101 and 12, 116 coming out of the guerneville area towards graton this morning, north bay being hammered. this is very heavy rainfall. then it lightens up a bit towards tiburon. it's beginning to swing towards the san rafael, richmond bridge. no rain on the peninsula at this particular time. right lane in pacifica, half moon bay. we have some hit and miss scattered showers in the santa cruz mountains all this more of that subtropical moisture associated with the plume that's tapping into that subtropical moisture. this is the core of the head

roberta gonzales is tracking it all with her hi-def doppler. >> i'm here in the kpix 5 weather centerat i have been noting in the past 15 minutes is while everybody has been getting punched by the very gusty winds this morning, i'm now noticing more widespread rain showers. this storm is now referring its ugly head over the bay area. in fact, hi-def doppler radar is indicating that we are picking up more moderate to heavy downpours. it was at first just the north bay being hounded with heavy rain and gusty winds. marinwood, san rafael, richmond, berkeley, highway 101 and traversing into the eastern portion of the bay area. it is very, very slow morning commute. look at the bay bridge now with moderate to heavy downpours all the by into chinatown. this is south san francisco three-hour 40-minute delays on some arriving flights due to the deer to year rating conditions there. we do have gusty winds associated with this rainfall that's now entering the san ramon area and that 580/680 corridor of the tri-valley. the unstable air mass will affect our weather tomorrow in the form of scatter
