roberta gonzales is live in santa clara with just how the low temperatures have dropped. roberta. >> reporter: well, kenny and michelle, what a rude awakening to everybody here in the bay area this morning when our temperatures away from the bay tumbled into the 20s and right around that freezing point. in fact, we put together composites of some of the temperatures around our microclimates early this morning. we saw 28 degrees in napa. it was 31 degrees in concord. certainly freezing in the livermore area. 37 degrees apiece in fremont and in san jose. and san francisco, you, too were cool at 44 degrees. now, the second side of this story happens to be our live hi- def doppler radar picking up rain showers around the bay area. a lot of this green on the screen happens to be virga where the rain is evaporating before it hits the ground but nonetheless you mix the rain with the cold air in place and end result, you see some of that purple and pink on your tv screen, that is actually some sleet or even light snow already occurring around sonoma mountain, also mount st. helena. we have had the cold. now we have the rain. it's a one-two punch and we'll track this incoming system together coming up later in this newscast. kenny, michelle? >> all right, roberta. thank you. >>> a democratic heavy hitter who represented california for 24 years is stepping down. senator barbara boxer took the podium today to deliver remember farewell address. >> all i wanted to do, make life beautiful for people. i didn't always succeed. i didn't always prevail. i felt the pain of losing many times but i can honestly say i never stopped trying. roberta gonzales is live in san francisco tracking how long it will stick around. roberta. >> reporter: we have a little bit of light sprinkles here in san francisco, a gentle breeze and mostly cloudy skies. it's definitely the calm before the storm. so let's get to it. it's live hi-def doppler picking up light precipitation where it's been all morning long across the north bay right there. the yountville area backing through napa all this very light and minimal. so when is the big rain coming in? let's get to futurecast as we walk through the afternoon hours into the evening commute. there you go. the light rain remains well to the north of the golden gate bridge. tomorrow morning sun-up after 7:00 rain still to the north. then we forge ahead towards lunch hour and there you have it. heavy rain, gusty winds up to 45 miles per hour, continuing through the evening commute as well and then by sunrise on friday, we begin to see a clearing trend. but there's a whole lot of watches you need to know about. we'll talk about that later in this newscast. >>> the police chief of hayward announcing today that she is retiring. diane stuart has been head of the department since 2011. she was placed on paid administrative leave in august over personnel issues. details were never released but there were reports that she allegedly showed favoritism toward a contractor whom she later married. her retirement was announced in a letter to members of the department. >>> this just in. this man is behind bars after threatening to bomb a santa clara vta vehicle. police saythe 52-year-old manmade a phone call and sent an email to the vta around 10 a.m. this morning and planned to blow up one of the agency's vehicles. all vta vehicles were stopped and searched as a precaution. >>> right now, alameda county sheriff's investigators are trying to solve a mysterious homicide case. a woman who was killed before her house was set on fire. deputies are on the scene on grove way in castro valley. maria medina joins us where she spoke with a neighbor of the victim. >> reporter: michelle, neighbors are of course in shock and as you can see behind me, investigators remain on scene here 32 hours after arriving. the question is, who did it and why? >> it just doesn't make any sense. it really doesn't make any sense. >> reporter: across the street for the last day and a half, scott parsons watched investigators take over his neighbor's home. >> my questions of course are why. >> reporter: yesterday, firefighters battling a blaze inside stumbled on the body of the widow who lived there for decades. even after her husband passed away earlier this year. >> i hadn't really seen her since that time. i assume grieving. >> reporter: scott says the couple was friendly. and while he had not seen the widow since her husband died, he hadn't seen anything suspicious at the home leaving him and others on grove way wondering if it was a random act of violence. >> that's something that just makes it more horrible but also puts us in fear. >> reporter: whatever the case, investigators say the murderer set a fire in the attic on purposes to cover up any evidence and moved the body into the garage. her two adult children now left without their parents and so many questions. >> the family came and i guess that's where they got the news of, um, their mother's passing. because i saw their grief, it was heart-wrenching. i'll never forget it. >> reporter: the identity of the 59-year-old victim hasn't been released yet. maria medina, kpix 5. >>> other bay area headlines. firefighters worked all morning to knock down a four-alarm blaze in santa rosa. the fire broke out on wilson street around 2 a.m. according to the fire marshal, this was a warehouse used to store books and furniture. no injuries reported. and the cause of the fire is under investigation. >>> a watsonville man is in custody, suspected on charges of burglary, auto theft and possession of an illegal firearm. justin har ra was arrested last night at a motel six in watsonville. he surrendered and admitted he had this gun in the room. harrah was not allowed to have a gun because of a court order. >>> a final play for the paraders. the city of oakland and alameda county saying yes to a new plan but now the question is, will it be a touchdown with the nfl? >> plus, hitting the roads in san francisco. when you'll be able to take an uber right without anyone behind the wheel. aleppo, after a ceasefire collapsed. the syrian regime has re- >>> in the middle east fighting is continuing in aleppo after a collapse of a cease-fire. the syrian government has retain most of the area from the fighters. tens of thousands of civilians are trapped and many people are reported killed. the government is backed by russia and iraq. the u.s. ambassador to the united nations had harsh words for the those countries. >> are you truly incapable of shame? is there literally nothing that can shame you? roberta. yesterday i told you, you got to write that book. guide to the bay area by roberta gonzales! it's 6:35. let's check the roads. starting with the altamont pass our heaviest traffic of the morning right now coming off 205 at 18 miles per hour. just up to 33 miles per hour once you hit north flynn road due to an earlier truck fire. it's cleared off the road but, of course, those residual ballparks will delay you. north tracy boulevard to the altamont pass will take 30 minutes to the dublin interchange. let's take a look at the bay bridge toll plaza. that crash right past the metering lights is cleared. so there are no delays across the span here. from the carquinez bridge along the eastshore freeway to the maze will take about 20 minutes. and then those metering lights are not even on. how about that? moving over now to mass transit, bart is on time. ace trains are on time. muni express buses most of those will not be running this week because of the holiday schedule and also san francisco bay ferries the 6:40 ferry out of alameda is delayed 10 to 15 minutes due to mechanical issues if you are running out the door right now to catch it. fyi. otherwise you're all good. i'll send it to you. >> all right, roqui. thank you. >>> san francisco's van ness avenue finally has the money it needs to ease congestion. the city has just been given $75 million in federal grant money for the van ness improvement project. it involves overhauling the stretch from lombard to mission and building the city's first lanes dedicated solely for rapid transit bus routes. the price tag nearly a quarter billion dollars set to be done in 2020. >>> deputies have made an arrest in connection with the death of a san jose state university teacher beaten to death with a baseball bat. deputies believe her son committed the murder. they arrested the 39-year-old man at a home on roof road in gilroy. he was taken in on murder charges christmas day. >>> deputies are now trying to determine nottive. >>> a bay area -- determine the motive. >>> a bay area versace store is being sued for racial profiling. a former employee says they used a special code for black customers when they came in. chris shapiro said his manager told his employees to say d410 do warn that blacks are coming in. he told his boss he was part african-american and then fired for not, quote, understanding luxury. >> can't believe that employees there would actually be okay with that. >> that's true, then they should definitely have, like, overhaul in the company and think about ways to improve their diversity. >> in a statement versace said we don't tolerate discrimination on the basis of race, national religion or any other characteristics protected by our civil rights laws. >>> happening today, secretary of state john kerry delivers his vision of how to bring an end to violence between israel and palestine. his final mideast policy speech is drawing criticism after the u.s. did not use its security council veto to block a u.n. resolution condemning israel for building settlements on occupied land. and at 6:38 in other news. >>> a historic visit to pearl harbor. japan's prime minister and president obama came together at the site in hawaii. now, the visit honors the 75th anniversary of the japanese attack that killed more than 2,000 people and launched the u.s. into world war ii. president obama praised the two countries for coming together. >> the most bitter of adversaries can become the strongest of allies. the fruits of peace always outweigh the plunder of war. >> abe is the fourth japanese prime minister to visit pearl harbor but he is the first to visit the u.s.s. arizona memorial. >>> police in philadelphia made four arrests after shopping mall riot for the second straight night. "cbs this morning" starts at 7:00. >>> speaking of technology, stocks are inching toward a major milestone as online retailer amazon enjoys a blockbuster holiday season. jill wagner has that and more in this morning's moneywatch. >> reporter: u.s. markets opened at record highs again today. the dow continued its climb to 20,000. it jumped 11 points yesterday. the nasdaq opens at a new record jumping 24 points yesterday. >>> u.p.s. expects that this will be a record year for returning holiday gifts and january fifth alone u.p.s. expects to deliver 1.3 million packages that would be the busiest returns day ever. the surge in online sales led to an increase in returns by mail. >>> no surprise then amazon says it had its best holiday season ever shipping more than a billion items across the globe. december 19 was the peak shipping day. echo products the virtual assistant alexa were the top sellers. >>> and it still costs more to make a penny than its worth. a spokesman for the u.s. mint said that it cost 1.5 cents to make a penny in 2016. that is the first time that costs have been up since 2011. the mint says there's no metal alternative to cut the costs. the nickel costs 8 cents to produce. a dime cost is just under 4 cents apiece to produce. and that's your cbsmoneywatch report. for more follow me on twitter at #jillwagnercbs. at the new york stock exchange i'm jill wagner. >>> time now 6:46. new video shows tesla's self- driving car living up to its fullest potential. this autopilot feature senses a wreck and stops with seconds to spare. it was caught on camera. all was quiet on the road until a couple of beeps from this car in the netherlands spelled trouble. the car starts braking by itself before the wreck. this autopilot upgrade reportedly relies more on the car's radar than its cameras to predict accidents. >>> hopefully no accidents on the roads right now. but let's check in with roqui to see how the roads are looking. >>> you are right no accidents. things were busy but now getting quieter and it's "holiday light" so let's check the altamont pass which is recovering from heavy traffic due to an earlier truck fire. so that truck fire is off the roads and traffic is moving at about 30 miles per hour. north tracy boulevard to the altamont pass now along 580 westbound will take you about 25 minutes on to the dublin interchange. here's a live look at the san mateo bridge heading into the peninsula from hayward to foster city, that's 880 to 101 a quick 15 minutes and also the nimitz looking good in both directions right now. 880 northbound from 238 in san leandro to the maze, that's a 17-minute drive. all right. if you are driving along the bay bridge toll plaza, into downtown san francisco, you are saying thank you! because you are good to go. carquinez bridge along the eastshore freeway to the maze will take you 19 minutes and those metering lights are not on at the toll plaza so you're good heading into san francisco. and also in the south bay, foster farms bowl utah utes versus indiana hoosiers kickoff at 5:30 p.m. i want to sell you something about mass transit. vta shuttle buses to the ace train this evening will run 10 minutes early because of this game. are you excited for the game? >> i'm with the hoosiers. they have an insane run defense. and by the way, the utes went on like a four-game losing streak at the end of the season, as well. so we'll have that forecast coming up. [ laughter ] >> good morning, everybody. live weather camera looking out towards the bay bridge where we have crystal clear skies. visibility is unlimited. and it is cold. subfreezing right now in santa rosa at 30 degrees. it's freezing in livermore. it's 33 degrees in redwood city. oakland at 37 degrees. that's the coldest you have been all week wrong. 44 degrees due west of the bay bridge in san francisco. we have other notable numbers right now. good morning to our weather watchers. we have peggi in petaluma. 28 degrees. linda in fairfield 29. and katie in hayward sporting 40 degrees. even though it is cold this morning, it's going to pan out to be warmer. and looking ahead friday through tuesday, daily chances of rain. new year's eve, although we'll be cloudy, we will be dry for the evening celebrations. okay. here's the deal. high pressure is building in from the west. it's producing an offshore component northeast winds up to 15 late in the day. advancing ahead though into your friday this is when we start to see the changes in our forecast. clouds thicken up. rain chances santa cruz mountains. another area of low pressure pushes in on saturday from the south producing daily chances of rain over the weekend. 32 degrees in sacramento, stockton and davis going up to 56. clear skies in monterey bay back through big sur into pebble beach going up to a high of 60. it's spring-like skiing in the high sierra at 47 degrees. here's your snow report. heavenly good morning to you, lots of packed powder, you have really terrific conditions in 25 out of 28 lifts available. and spring-like snowy conditions at north star. 18 of 20 available to get you to the highest peaks. 50s and low 60s today across the board. northeast winds again kind of breezy late day up to 15. yes, i'm going there. 66 outside number today in santa cruz. computer models suggest 70 in santa cruz tomorrow. then that chance of rain from friday through tuesday. we do have some football action at levi's stadium. 5:30 clear skies, in the mid- 50s. enjoy your day. >>> oakland police are searching for the suspect who fatally shot a former marine. 23-year-old christopher killian served in the marines after graduating from hayward high school. friends say that he returned to the bay area to look after his sick father. police say that killian was in east oakland monday night when he was shot on humboldt avenue. killian's friends are stressing that he had no involvement with local gangs. >> simply i think he was in the wrong place at the wrong time. [sobbing ] >> for those thinking that this could be gang involved or he was involved in anything, he wasn't. he was not that type. [ sobbing ] >> he was never involved in anything like that not even fighting besides fighting for his country. >> killian died at the scene. police say that they have made no arrests and now see no motive. ♪[ music ] >>> time now 6:51. a very noisy post-christmas tradition gets under way today in the bay area. >> they sleep in the parking lot near work because they are exhausted. you know why san jose police officers are being told to get out. ,, ,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,, deputies found eleven stolen vehicles... some being dismantled... on a 40-acre property on ramsey road in fairfield. the property owner >>> four men are under arrest in solano county after a chop shop bust vehicles being dismantled on ramsey road in fairfield. the property owner was among those arrested. >>> ive things to know at the :55. today secretary of state john kerry delivers his vision of how to end the violence between israel and palestine. the speech comes just days after a u.n. resolution condemning settlements on occupied land. >>> more winter weather will hit much of the pacific northwest today and tomorrow of. strong winds expected to cause drifting snow and dangerous travel conditions. the mountains could see two feet of snow or more. >>> family, friends and fans are remembering carrie fisher best known as princess leia from "star wars." the 60-year-old died yesterday after cardiac arrest last friday on a flight from london. co-star harrison ford said carrie was one of a kind, brilliant and original. >>> today, in san francisco we will host the annual post- christmas wood shipper event at city hall. dozens of christmas trees will meet their end starting at 10:30. the wood chips will be used for mulch or as biomass to generate electricity. the event is meant to remind people to recycle their trees. >>> a replacement menorah is being installed at san francisco's washington square park after the previous one was stolen over the weekend. the 6-foot-tall brass menorah was set up next to the christmas tree on christmas eve. another one will come today from massachusetts. >>> i'm kpix 5's maria medina at sjpd where officers who are sleeping in the parking lot are being told to move to make room for the circus. it was just a few months that kpix 5 broke the story and told you about a dozen officers who were sleeping in rvs in a parking lot not too far from the police department. many live far and needed to sleep in rvs to get some rest between regular and mandatory overtime shifts. but recently they were told to leave the parking lot or risk being towed because cirque du soleil is coming to town and just like every year, they use this parking lot near sjpd. there was a solution. the cops aren't being kicked out but they are being moved next door. >> the nice thing is our chief's office realized we have to put them somewhere else. that's what they did. >> reporter: and we spotted work cruise setting up lights and rvs in the parking lot. there are 30 new recruits in the academy to help with the shortage of police officers here. that's causing all of this. but we have learned that the same number of current officers will be leaving by retiring or relocating to other departments. and you can see a few of those rvs right behind me: it's on the other side of the original fence. live at s jpd, maria medina, kpix 5. >>> 6:57. let's take a look at your bay area roads out the door. first, the altamont pass. this has been a problem all morning and now we have two new crashes along the way to tell you about. first, westbound 580 after granted line road this is a multi-vehicle crash involving a big rig and two pickup trucks blocking the right lane and as you keep going you get to north flynn road and after that there's a two-car crash in the left lane. expect delays from the altamont pass to livermore and then the dublin interchange. hayward to foster city 14 minutes between 880 and 101. on the nimitz looking good 238 in san leandro to the maze taking 17 minutes. roberta, how could you possibly not have a terrific day after taking a look at this right?
