robert: why is that?aria: well, about 6 or 7 years ago, the marin food bank and the san francisco food bank merged, and so now our food bank serves both of those counties and there is great need for food assistance in both areas. robert: are they unique needs for both or are there a lot of common--is there a lot of common ground? maria: well, geographically of course they're very different. marin is very spread out. we actually have a mobile pantry that goes all the way out to the ranches in west marin, and san francisco is much more concentrated and we have a lot of neighborhood pantries. so they're unique in their own ways, and of course we try to serve both at the highest level. robert: i always ask people about the demand, and if anybody ever tells me the demand is going down, i'll probably faint. but most the time, demand is coming--even going up higher than people would be comfortable with, huh? maria: yes, and i think you would expect the way that our economy is booming here in the bay area that al

robert: will they try to protect robert mueller, senate republicans? manu: no. right now there are a hanreul of blicans who want to go that way but not enough to actually force the issue. you'll see democrats try to force the issue le that and pressure republicans to join them. you'll see republicans try defend the president in many ways and lindsey graham who wilh r the judiciary committee told me he wants to look into the f.b.i.'s handling of the russia investigation. robert: i want to explain the laugh a littleit. you're really saying the president has so much capital still with his party, people don't want to break ranks? manu: no question about it. one of the lessons senate republicans have drawn,t they doant to be on his bad side and when he's on their good side he can b helpful with their base. robert: adam schiff, house intelligence committee, what to expect from him? jake: he'll beed empow and he's a close ally of nancy pelosi and if she's speaker of the house, that's someone to keep an eye on. the intelligence committee has turned from being a place wh

robert: very few.he first m&a banker on the ground focused on tech and we decided to do a tech group. nexus, a dynamic of opportunity. david: did you meet steve jobs? robert: i did not meet steve jobs personally but i was on the you may at the time, not remember this, apple was under assault. there is a different board. fire the board, got rid of the ceo and invited to come back. david: you are living in the san byncisco area, a big success investment banking standards and i presume you are highly compensated. what propelled you to say, i'm going to give this up and start my own company? robert: the interesting thing that occurred, as an engineer, i realized way back in my goodyear tire & rubber days, the impact that software have on businesses. there are very few software companies that were efficiently run. why? most executives that started software companies wrote code or knew a market opportunity and they sold the code. i have run into this small company in houston, texas, the most efficient softwa

robert: lisa, whut a deal? could the democrats ask for protections for dreamers, undocumented immigrants, in exchange for some funding f the wall? lisa: absolutely. there are some in the democratic caucus who think now that the house will be control by democrats, it will move the tenor of the debate more towards the middle. with republicans controlling both chambers, things were moving too far to the right for any deal to make through the more moderate senate so there hope that a limited deal with democrats coming intoco power d get through. but could that happen by december 7? and with democrats working through their dine -- dynamics, seems unlikely. robert: what's your read on senate majority leader mitch mcconnell and how he'll handle this?oe manu: he not want a shutdown. he's made that clear for weeks. after going to the white house recently he told reporters there won't be a shutdown. a couple of days later, trump said a shutdown may not be a bad idea so it's obviously, as erica was saying, not ultimately

robert: that's right. we want to talk about some of the consequences of when you--when that doesn't happen. but give us an idea why it is so hard to actually find people. a lot of people think of it as something that should be fairly routine. why is it so hard to find certain segments? nick: sure, i think when we think of the normal census taker, you're right, it is pretty simple. we're talking about, for the most part, very few questions, a 10-minute job of just filling out your basic information. but there are communities out here in the area and in california, most importantly, who don't have as easy of a tim. and this census particularly solves--has actually a lot of problems that could pose, you know, pretty dire consequences to s, oflks like immigrants who maybe don't speak engliser tto accesg that information, or wanting to give that information, folks who are without homes, folks with disabilities. it's hard to track these people down. even students and very young children are often left off the ce

[laughter] justice roberts: and i should say i had a wonderful -- i had not seen the seven-story mural down the street before, but i enjoyed that. it was, again, i guess, along the same lines, to make a particular point accessible. the opinion was about the legal concept of standing, which is that our jurisdiction is limited to actual cases and controversies, and therefore you have to have something at stake in a controversy before we are allowed to decide it. it was a situation where a particular company was complaining about something, but they did not have a concrete stake in it. i thought that would be a good way of elucidating that concept. prof. stein: and you said? justice roberts: i said when you have nothing, you have nothing to lose. i got into a little debate with the "new york times" about it. they said "when you ain't got nothing, you have nothing to lose." when you look at the actual published lyrics, it went "when you have nothing to lose, you have nothing to lose." pro

cokie roberts: even -- mrs. bush: even to first ladies. cokie roberts: it was on military statuses. do you continue that work together? mrs. bush: not really. not since they left. it does not mean we would not at some time continue to do something together, but not really. we have seen each other at funerals. cokie roberts: there was press about the fact that president -- -- mrs. bush: gave her an altoid. which was considered -- i don't know, what? i do not know why that was so fascinating. you do say there is a bond among first ladies. mrs. bush: all of the first ladies know what it is like and they are friendly with each other. maybe they would not be if they ran against each other. the presidents and the being friends, too. cokie roberts: i remember interviewing president bush 41 soon after office and he said, i cannot imagine i will be friends with clinton the way ford and carter are. then he became the fifth son. robert: what happened there?huck: what was interesting about florida in gene it is the microcosm of america as i always say as i always joke it's america's sedyment. robert: it's better than that. chuck: there are great parts in florida. there are very few swing counties. it was margins in every county that didn't touchalt water was once again just like 2016 showed up in big numbers. the counties that touched salt water were the places crthat des did pretty well in. look, thisoiecount is g to be, i think the first round of what is going to be ay blood partisan warfare for the next two years. this is going to be the backdrop to 2020. the presidenter is ing himself into this. there's going to be a lot of court battles believe it or not there will be threeecnts. one for the senate race. the governor's race continues to shrink too. don't think it's going to get into the hand recount, b it's something else. one larger point i want to make though. this was a blue wave but there was more realignment that necessarily wav

his comments to justice john roberts, chief justice john roberts, came hours after the report that trumpssured an independent wing of our government to do his bidding. you'll recall according to the "new york times" trump wanted the justice department to prosecute two of his political adversaries, hillary clinton and james comey, whom he fired. to help us make clear just how unusual this is, we are joined once again by the author and presidential historian michael beschloss. his latest work essential reading, especially during these times, is called "presidents of war." it is available now wherever fine books are sold, as they say. so michael, not that historians have a moment to jump off the train and do what you do best and assess, but take just this week. how will we assess this reported attempt to use the justice department to harm an adversary? and today this attempt to discredit the federal bench and chiefly the supreme court. >> well, we've seen a president really trying to get americans not to trust the judicial branch of our government. i never thought i would live to see this d

robert: you mentioned your time at harvard. while you were the dean of harvard, the number of hours students dedicated to provide no -- dedicated to pro bono more than doubled. significant changes were made in the way that occurred. what changes are you most proud of for your time at harvard? what advised -- what advised you have for others in increasing the interest in public interest in's? justice kagan: listening to dean trainor talk about all the hours georgetown students spent doing pro bono work, my predecessor put in place a mandatory pro bono requirement. i forget what it was. i think it was something like 50 hours. that was the minimum. that had been put in place a year or two before i got there. what we discovered is that people just didn't, and more and -- it was not a question of making sure that people did it. it more anddid more. 10 times, 20 times. when dean was reading, i felt like saying, if the dean of harvard law school were here, that he would challenge dean trainor to a contest. they are roughly schools of

[laughter] robert: [inaudible] justice kagan: better be good. robert: this is a good one. [laughter] robert: every time we have a new nominee for the court, there is the question that gets asked -- should justices have life tenure, and if you could, what do you think are the advantages and disadvantages of life tenure for a supreme court justice? justice kagan: are we retroactively applying this? [laughter] because i am: pretty happy. it seems like a good job. i am happy with it being life tenure. i don't know. it is a hard question. obviously, the reason for life tenure is a very important one, that it makes people independent and it means that none of us are thinking about the next job we will have because we will not have a next job. and nobody is ever going to be in a position where they ever need anything from anybody ever again. and that is a really important thing, to ensure that the judicial branch is independent. now, could you do that with sufficiently long terms? 18 years seems to be the going proposal. maybe. i am not saying that there is nothing to proposals l

[laughter] i had the honor of being the person to interview the two of you together. i got a call saying, can you be in tanzania next week? i said no. my husband said, why not? off i went. there were the two of you. it was such an important symbol for the first ladies of africa. mrs. bush: in many cases, it would never speak to the leader before them. because they were corrupt or there was another reason. they would not have the continuity we have with our ruler, presidents and former first ladies. it is like a club. just like the national governors association gives you the chance to be with other governors and their spouses, gives you a chance to know what is going on. it is helpful for first ladies to be together. it is a great example both for americans to see and people in other countries to say. cokie roberts: you have basically said to mrs. obama, do whatever you want to do. you can make a speech or whatever. she could have hijacked it. she wouldn't. you knew that. she wanted t

john roberts is drawing a line here. this started after a federal judge issued a temporary restraining order blocking the trump administration from barring migrants who entered the united states illegally from seeking asylum. that prompted this response from the president. >> well, you go to the ninth circuit and it's a disgrace and i'm going to put in a major complaint because you cannot win if you're us, a case in the ninth circuit. i think it's a disgrace when people file -- every case gets filed in the ninth circuit. the ninth circuit, we're going to have to look at that because every case, no matter where it is, they file it practically, i mean practically, for all intents and purposes they file it in what's called the ninth circuit. this was an obama judge. >> the chief justice of the united states, john roberts who, by the way, was appointed by republican president george w. bush, took issue with that. the issue was clearly a rebuke. in an official statement he said, quote, we do not have obama judges or trump jud

it's a big deal that john roberts said this considering that john roberts doesn't say a lot of things quite often particularly when it comes to being critical of the president. the idea john roberts criticized the president or suggested that the president's criticism of judges is misguided, seems important to me. >> extraordinarily important for one branch to stand up against another branch, this is what the founders envisioned. for the branches to check each other. and roberts was doing that standing up for the rule of law, standing up for an independent judiciary. the big question is whether there will be more of this to come and whether in some of his decisions, whether he will side with the moderates on the court instead of just going right down the line with conservatives on say questions of whether a president can be subpoenaed and other things that relate to the investigation of trump when they come before the supreme court, which they're likely to do in the next couple of years, roberts is no longer quite as predictable a vote as he was before because he believes that this pre
