nic robertson joins us live from riyadh, saudi arabia. nic? >> reporter: good morning. the white house seems to be in lockstep with the saudis at this moment, you know, strategic patience, strategic caution. the united states and saudi arabia both share a huge and growing, steeply growing concern about what they see as iran's gray maligned influence in the region, and what has happened here in saudi arabia is an opportunity for saudi arabia and the united states to build bigger international support for saudi's position. this is something that's been lacking in recent years. so we heard this morning the saudi ambassador to london saying that while they believe that the attack had the backing of iran and in this context he means essentially who else in this region would have the capacity, the wherewithal to develop these weapons systems, to deploy these weapons systems, to be able to put them into the hands of those in the region. he's saying undoubtedly it was iran-backed, but saudi arabia doesn't want to rush into anything. the last thing he said the region needs right

. >>> our nic robertson has more from saudi arabia about it. hello there, nic. >> reporter: good morning, natalie. while the president said he's showing restranltd on ining res. one part of it that he appears to have chosen on the military front here, of course, knowing that he did yesterday announced increased sanctions on iran, on the state bank there. so on the one hand he's taking those sanctions measures, but this is a military measure, but very clearly being telegraphed as a defensive mention, that this is for missile defense systems, to support saudi arabia. clearly there were holes in its defensive posture because those attacks last weekend got through. and what's significant, they're not seen before on this scale. that said the president and the saudis are really sort of, it appears at the moment, at least, trying to take a measured response, not racht up tensions too far, if you will. president trump has said he's waiting for the saudis to take leadership on the current situation. the crown prince mohammad bin salman said he's looking

nic robertson, first to you. secretary of state mike pompeo arriving in saudi arabia. what are the expectations out of this meeting and does it put the united states closer to a military response? >> reporter: i don't think it necessarily puts them closer, but it puts them more in lock step with saudi arabia. saudi arabia's signaling at the moment and the voice we heard on it most recently was the ambassador to london this morning saying that saudi does not want to escalate this, does not want to rush into an escalation. the region doesn't want another war at this time. i am sure from saudi officials today that they have the capacity and resolve to strike back forcefully if that is desired. certainly they would look to the united states here. but they are looking to build a bigger and broader coalition. the u.s. and saudi arabia are in lock step on this issue that they both see iran has a malign issue. there may be concern here they've heard from president trump say that in essence the strike was not against us, it was against saudi. we're looking to saudi to make the

our international diplomatic editor nic robertson is in riyadh, saudi arabia. our senior international correspondent nick paton walsh joins us from tehran. good morning to you both. nic, let's begin with you and the reporting you are getting this morning. many important details on where this attack was launched and with what. >> yeah, poppy, what we're learning from a source familiar with the investigation is that some of these missiles, these low-level cruise missiles that are sort of a hybrid of cruise missile and drone technology, that unlike the traditional cruise missile that the united states or other governments around the world might have, you know, fly with at quite a speed. but along a variable trajectory. these ones of capable at flying at lower speed, low altitude with the wingspan, the additional drone technology. and this -- all this information is coming because some of these missiles fell short of their targets. this is what we're learning from the source familiar with the investigation. they fell short of their target, landed in the desert to t

nic robertson is standing by live for us in riyadh. what are we learning?tting a feeling why the weapon systems were made in iran and why the united states has been so clear that the root of the attack lies in iran. that's because some of the weapons systems, the cruise missiles, drone-assisted, if you will, fell short of their target. they came in from the north. they haven't fully exploded. there's evidence on the ground that investigators can get their hands on and analyze. u.s. weapons experts are on the ground and recovered. what they are also assessing is there is a high probability, and this is the assessment of saudi arabia and the united states, that the weapons were fired from bases inside iran. close to the border with iraq. and then, down over kuwait and down into saudi arabia, and hit their targets from the north. that's the assessment. the weapon systems, they found in the desert, have not been shown to worse. have not been made public. there's evidence of them beginning to emerge. but they're in fact, launched from iran. what the officials ar

>> cnn's nic robertson joins us now from the united nations.en if there is not a formal meeting, is there a sense you're hearing from sources that there could be progress made on the sidelines there? >> reporter: you know, i think it's going to be very difficult for two reasons. number one, president trump is under huge pressure from his allies like saudi arabia and the united arab emirates in the gulf not to do anything that smacks of appeasement or at least changing a hard and tough position with iran over the attacks in saudi arabia over the past week. i think that's one thing. and i think also the difficulty from the iranian perspective. we have heard from iranian president rouhani on his way over here saying the reason he has decided to come because he says it's clear the united states doesn't want iranian delegations here, and that is reason to come and talk about how the u.s. sanctions on iran aren't working at all. when you hear rationale like that, that is a rationale to a domestic audience showing the difficulty of a position that the

cnn's dick robertson gott a first-land look at one of the oil facilities attacked in saudi arabia. >> jake, it is astounding. this is ground zero of what really strikes you, we went to ab qaiq and 18 drones were able to target 18 different small pieces of equipment there and that is what really struck me. that you have these long lines of towers and inside of the plant and the drones hit them this was sophisticated, it was coordinated and designed to take down some of the key elements at the early stages of the refining process, but that is the clue here. that is really the clue. because what was taken down in the strikes is going to be relatively easily repaired. the fires were put out within hours and ramco who owns the company was proud of that fact. but the reality was that these strikes on ramco and the saudi leadership know this, could have targeted huge oil storage facilities, could have targeted areas or royal wells themselves that could have burned for days and days and days and not been so easily contained. so this is huge. it was big. it will be relatively easy for the gove

nic robertson joins us from riyadh with all the new details. what have you learned? >> reporter: what we're hearing from a source familiar with the investigation gives us some understanding of why secretary of state mike pompeo may have said very quickly that iran was responsible. and perhaps gives more understanding as well why the saudis officially said yesterday these weapon systems were made by iran. now what we learned from this source is that some of the missiles that were fired at this plant fell short. they fell in the desert to the north of this petroleum facility. that gives the indication the weapons were coming from the north, not from the south as the houthis said. because they fell into the desert, they didn't explode properly which is giving the u.s. and saudi investigators good, quality evidence. unexploded missile parts to examine or determine who made them frand where they were from. what they've been able to determine is that with this high degree of probability, these weapons were fired from an iranian base close to the border with iraq and then f
