nic robertson, thank you so much. let's go now to fred pleitgen in berlin. what are the foreign ministers saying there on that finland issue? >> reporter: the finland issue, they want finland in nato as fast as possible and of course sweden as well. but right now finland is one of the main points of the agenda because that is the one that could ask for that extension in the next coming hours as nic was just alluding to. one of the things that the foreign ministers of nato said as they arrived for this meeting this morning is that they say that they want to see this through very quickly. they say that finland is obviously ready for nato membership, it certainly meets all the criteria that are necessary, but they also say that if the russians are angry about finland wanting to come into nato, russians and vladimir putin only have themselves to blame. they say that it is of course finland and sweden as well looking to enhance their security and that is why they are asking for nato membership. and the germans who are hosting this meeting, they say they want to m

nic robertson is following this from helsinki, finland.t is likely to come out of this meeting, and how significant is this ahead of victory day in russia tomorrow? >> reporter: of course, this is the 77th anniversary of ve day, victory in europe day, for the vast majority of europe. the 8th of may is that day where they celebrate the unconditional surrenders of the nazis in world war ii. russia chooses to do it a day later. this is significant. the date and the timing is significant. particularly with reference to victory day on the 9th of may and moscow. we've heard that from the white house. jen psaki, the spokesperson at the white house, has said this should not be -- this should clearly be understood, that this is coming ahead of the day that president putin is expected to try to make triumphalist, provide a witting narrative to the russians about ukraine, which of course he says that isn't true. we are expected to hear from president zelenskyy. we know his conversations with world leaders and particularly the g7 he will likely be ask

nic robertson joins us now live. how rare of a public statement is this? >> from such a senior diplomat, and a good assignment in geneva, apparently until now, very good standing within the russian foreign ministry, this is quite significant. let's not forget, the mission that he serves at in geneva is one that's already seen the rebound effect of putin's war in ukraine because that was the mission where the russian representative for the united nations high commission human rights council, their representative was thrown off there, so this is a mission that has seen first-hand the world's reaction. this diplomat is clearly utterly incensed, as you're describing it there. he says that this is a war not just against ukraine but against the world, a crime not just against ukrainians but russians. why? because essentially that snuffs out the possibility of a free and prosperous society in the future, but there's also very strong rebuke from his boss, sergey lavrov, saying the foreign ministry is no longer interested in diplomacy and sober intelligence estimat

nic robertson is in helsinki tonight and nic, as we talk about the front lines and the fight here in ukraine, obviously, so much of this for putin is about his perception of nato, which he has successfully made get bigger as part of all of this. so, what needs to happen next for finland to make their joining nato official? >> yeah, just a couple of small steps. the monumental decision, really, or announcement came today from the prime minister and the president. i mean, that really does signal what's happening. on sunday, the government is going to put forward its assessment which is going to be, let's join nato. that will go to the parliament on monday, and then it's just a matter of hours, maybe a couple of days, max, before the parliament's expected to vote on it. and i spoke to somebody, an mp in the prime minister's party just yesterday, and he told me, look, out of 200 members of parliament, more than 180 are going to vote for this. so, the big announcement was today. finland asking to join nato, foregone conclusion, just a matter of days now. >> all right, nic robertson, thank

nic robertson is in helsinki, finland, and sara sidner in kyiv. nic, let's begin with the impending expansion of nato, particularly finland's joining and expected that sweden will follow. finland, a neighbor of russia, resisted this step for decades, why now and what is the significance? >> reporter: two reasons. the invasion of ukraine by russia as seen in finland as meaning that putin is ready to take more risks. that emerged and unsettles them. they have a history of tensions with russia going back decades, hence they had been in this unaligned neutral status for years. and the other thing is just before the end of last year, the kremlin made statements, making it very clear that they didn't want any further expansion of nato. that would include finland and sweden. and to the finnish government that red light, a change in the russian government's position, and therefore they realized they were put on notice. take the two things together and it is really propelled this country really fast. 75% of the population, and as many as 180 out of 200 the
