nic robertson in the middle of those very active demonstrations. thank you very much. we will be coming back to you soon the biden ministration. meanwhile, has expressed optimism in recent days that a ceasefire deal is within reach. cnn's white house reporter kevin liptack is here with more kevin the u.s has been quite optimistic in recent weeks that they could reach a ceasefire deal yesterday saying that we're on the verge of one. how do we think that this news about six hostages is going to impact them? yeah. i don't think there's any question that it adds a layer of complexity to what had already been quake painstaking, difficult negotiations that had intensified over the last two weeks. but in reality, has been going on for months and months. and when you talk to american officials today, they do say, this does raise some new questions about just how serious hamas is about reaching a deal. but they also acknowledged that this is going to apply new pressure point on prime minister benjamin netanyahu. and certainly we're seeing that play out on the streets of israel

i want to bring in nic robertson in tel aviv. nic again, the news just in israel claiming they've killed hezbollah's leader. what more can you tell us? >> yeah, this is something that had certainly been circulating and heavily speculated and the length of time that it had taken hezbollah not to be able to give clarity about hassan nasrallah's circumstance following that massive targeted strike on the underground complex at the idf said that it was hitting in central beirut late yesterday. the speculation had been growing here that the idf had accomplished what it said. it's set out to do. and now of course the idea has said that and it's interesting, we've just heard from the army chief staff general herzi halevi, and he has said this is not the end of our toolbox. this is a message he says for anyone who would want to continue to strike at israel, the clear implication is that if other members of hezbollah continue to strike at israel, then israel is going to continue tim you to fire back and target at them that will perhaps com

. >> thanks so much also joined here in tel aviv by cnn's nic robertson, who has been covering this war since october 7 in the region for a great deal of time. you've been speaking to israeli officials in recent days and weeks? we at one point you made to me earlier, is that this assassination, the strike on azrallah, did not arise yesterday or two weeks ago, months ago, but has been in the works for many years. >> it has. i mean, the idf has had since 2006, the last major offensive in lebanon sedda how it does it, how it does it differently and it is doing it differently last time they were, there were big strikes in beirut. this time it has been targeted to disrupt the command and control. we saw that with the walkie-talkies, we saw that with the pagers then the leadership the leadership chip responsible for the southern border, the most threatening area to israel. and then the other parts of the leadership, the ones in control of the uavs, the ones in control of long-range rockets systematically taken down. and then the leadership. and in fact, we just heard from the idf what they ca

cnn's nic robertson is live in jerusalem. so what do we know about where these bodies were found? the reaction from officials. and is there any definition yet any clarity around the description of there being found being killed a short while before they the bodies were discovered we know that they were found in a tunnel in rafah in the south of gaza during ongoing combat operations by the idf. but on that specificity of the amount of time that they were killed before the troops got there. that's not clear. we don't know how they died and we don't know what led the troops to that tunnel during that combat operation. so there's a lot of unanswered things here. and in that vacuum a lot of pain, a lot of suffering, a lot of angry accusations that the vast majority as you were saying of the families of the hostages, are saying that the prime minister should take responsibility and own the fact that it is his own personal style of negotiating and terms of negotiating that have led to the deaths of these hostages. the prime minister in his recorded statement has pushed back very strongly

shots, likely sometime between thursday and friday of this week as the idf was closing in cnn's nic robertson is joining us live from tel aviv. and nick, you were there tonight at the height of these pro protests. you've been covering this for months now, did this feel different? >> it did feel different. there were a lot more young people. there were a lot more people would be impossible for us to count them and try to sort of verify that number of 500 50,000. but certainly a lot more than previous weekends. and these protests have been going on they began smaller early on in the year and have grown and grown and grown. but this by far the biggest number one point we were trying to walk across the center of the city through the protests from one side to the other. and you couldn't really tell but when you've gone to the other side because he was so many people on the streets who was 20 minutes to half an hour of walking and it was packed and people going in one day ration, people going in another direction. bands out playing with drums, a lot of people on the megaphone organizing the protest

kevin liptack, nic robertson. thank you both. i want to discuss this further with leon panetta, who served as defense secretary and cia director under president obama. and he was the white house chief of staff under president clinton. director panetta. thank you so much for being with us. i just want to get your reaction to what we're seeing in terms of these massive protests on the streets of tel aviv tonight well, there's no question that is really reflecting the anger and frustration but not being able to get any kind of temporary ceasefire that can allow for the exchange of the hostages we've seen these negotiations go on and on there's an element of hope that somehow a ceasefire can be achieved but unfortunately, what we saw in the deaths of the six hostages is the fact that no matter how much everybody hopes that we can get this done it isn't happening and the chances are that more hostages may be sad without question, hamas is responsible for the deaths of these and other hostages. >> and yet tonight we're hearing criticis

nic robertson in tel aviv. thanks very much. want to bring in kevin liptak. kevin, we've been tracking these hostage negotiations for months now. what are u.s official saying? how do you think that this is going to now affect the process? >> and there's no question that i think when you talk to american officials, they say this will complicate this in some capacity because remember i'm an american delegation had been in the middle east really for the last several weeks talking to all the parties and trying to get this deal over the finish line. and certainly when you talk to american officials, they do say, at least on paper, and in principle, the sides are not all that far apart. i think what this does, according to american officials officials is called into question in some way, the seriousness of hamas and towards reaching a deal. but what american officials also acknowledges that that will create more pressure for prime minister benjamin netanyahu to try and come up with some kind of agreement. and certainly you see that on the streets in israel today. n

nic robertson in israel. thanks to you as well. let's talk more about these developments with former hostage negotiator gershon baskin the middle east director for the international communities organization, gershon. thank you so much for being with me today. we heard kevin there saying that president biden has just said that he believes that the ceasefire deal is on the verge of being accomplished. but how does this horrible news of these six deaths of these young hostages impact those efforts to get the rest of the hostages out. and finally reach this pause in the fighting you know, to go against what president biden said. but in reality, israel is negotiating with itself. the qatari's, the egyptian mediators and hamas are not in the same circle of discussions with the state of israel prime minister, nothing keeps putting new additional red lines and conditions are in agreement. it's not the problem with the details. the basic problem is that hamas will not agree to anything that there's not included an end to the war. and prime
