from humble roots, baidu ceo robin li has carved his path in tech history. re is a closer look at the man behind the google of china. robin li may be china's third richest man and the wealthiest tech entrepreneur in the country. his road to success started in one of the unlikeliest of places, a small village 250 miles west of beijing. >> he was born in eastern china. his parents were factory workers. he had four sisters, he was the only boy. early on, he was interested in computers. >> after graduating from college in beijing, he headed to the united states. he earned a masters from the state university of new york, buffalo. his first big break came when he won a patent for online search. >> he had two things going for him. number one, he understood the importance of search. two, he was educated in the u.s. >> after a decade in the u.s., li returned to china with his business partner and together they founded the google of china. >> when you combine that with the secular growth of the internet traffic in china, a tremendous opportunity. >> his friends and fam

tony ma has overtaken baidu's robin li. his fortune is valued at $13 billion. shares in surge. they may challenge alibaba. now to ai, beyond robots. we have talked about how artificial intelligence is going to dramatically change the way we live. we talked about the head of facebook. we have somebody coming from microsoft. peter lee is the head of their research and he joins us now from redmond, washington. you are in charge of more than 1000 research labs around the world. what kind of thing are you focusing on? >> we are really covering a huge array of things. almost anything you could imagine in computing research and other parts of math, physics, computer science. a big focus right now, really on point for this segment, is artificial intelligence. we have been very focused. it is our largest investment area right now. >> one of the things you're working on is a virtual assistant. what could he or she do? >> one way to think about it is they try to answer questions and figure things out. one type of question is to figure out what questions? what did that per
