robin roberts with the president. >>> the celebrated saxophone player clarence clemons has died. to many fans, known simply as the big man. a great musician, certainly, but also, long-time friend to another music icon, the boss, bruce springsteen. rob nelson tonight is in asbury park, new jersey, where it all began. >> reporter: at every concert, fans relished the moment when the boss would make his final introduction. >> last but not least, secretary of the brotherhood, clarence clemons on the saxophone. >> reporter: at 6'5", 270 pounds, clemons was a giant on stage. and perhaps the only thing that outshined those booming sax solos -- ♪ was the uncommon brotherhood he shared with the e street band's bruce springsteen. after almost 40 years together, bruce and the big man, as he was known, were like an old married couple. >> love, respect and trust. you know? three qualities that every marriage should have. and it's based on that. >> reporter: back in the '70s, a racially integrated rock band was ground-breaking. but clemons became a star in his own right, jamming with presidents

and abc's robin roberts spoke with the commander in chief about what that experience taught him. she joins us now. robin, those lessons have not just influenced the president's decision as a father, but to colin powell's point, have they also shaped some administration's policies? >> that's a good point, yes, they have. christiane, president obama knows first hand the challenges one can face, growing up without a father in the home and has established many fatherhood initiative, including this year's program which is called strong father, strong families and the president sparked a national conversation, a dialogue about fatherhood and taking personal responsibilities, i've had a chance this week to go to the white house and sit down with the dad this chief. >> perfect day on father's day, is just spending time with them. the great thing, and some of this is malia and sasha are the perfect age, yep, 13, 10. where, you know, they are interesting, and funny, they are their own people, but they still actually want to spend time with you, and that may not last that many more years. so
