joining us now is robin thomas. thank you for being here. robin: thank you for having me.risten: tell arguers about the law center and how it came to be. robin: it was founded almost 30 years ago after the mass shooting in san francisco that happened in 1993, and in the wake of that tragedy, the legal community in san francisco decided they wanted take action to make a difference on this issue. since that time 30 years ago, the organization has grown and merged with the gabby gifford's organization, under the same umbrella, and we provide legal and technical support the media, legislators, violence intervention support, all kinds of programming focused on how we can reduce and prevent gun violence and bring accountability back into the system, so the organization is absolutely devoted to reducing this epidemic. kristen: ok. you mentioned former congresswoman gabby giffords of arizona. folks remember she was shot at a constituent's event am a recovered, and dedicated herself to fighting for gun control. shortly after her shooting with sandy hook, and that shooting seems to

i'm joined by robin thomas. laws, we both know those will argue they passed those laws in order to give people more opportunities to protect themselves, if there was a shooter at church. or protect themselves if there was a shooter. that's about the only rational i can think of those would argue for what we see here. texas has loosened gun laws. i mean, they passed a bill last year to allow hotel guests to store and carry firearms. they seem to continue to find ways to loosen restrictions on guns. people wonder why there's no action on the federal level >>well, chuck, it's the biggest fallacy of all that having more guns around is going to make us any safer. if that were true, it would be the safest country in the world. texas would be one of the safest states. what the facts tell us is looser gun laws, more guns in the hands of civilians, and in this case, completely untrained, unbackground checked civilians only makes our communities less safe. only puts our children more at risk. arming teachers, arming guard

robin thomas is the group's executive director. ns things are stalled and not working, but right now, for those who actually have hope that things can get better, or can be done tomorrow? >> we absolutely have to raise our voices at the state level, and the local level, most importantly, at the federal level. we talked about us in the past. until we pass federal regulation, state laws are asked to work, said orders of, course and guns will get into the wrong hands. absolutely need the senate to take up universal background checks. it passed the congress the years ago, so the congress has already voted on this, put it through, and the senate has even called it for vote. a city of vote on universal background checks. we know we have the votes we need. it is the absolute foreign based on trolling need an order to be and regulating down sharply in this country. >> here's the issue, going, needle over likely gonna get overly far away. national progress has gone nowhere. but they're already states that approve their laws. is this a fight

robin? >>> as we heard we're learning more about the shooter's texts and posts on social media raising questions about flagging the warning signs that someone might be preparing to harm others. our chief justice correspondent pierre thomas has more on that. good morning, pierre. >> reporter: robin, good morning. so what is the responsibility of social media companies? the companies have said they need to protect the privacy of their users and their right to free speech. so it's becoming clear in a lot of cases they were not monitoring users, especially private messages and chat groups and do the companies really have the technology to responsibly monitor millions of social media posts? law enforcement will monitor public forums known to promote hate or extremism but to dig deeper they often need a tip and evidence to get a warrant. >> pierre, in this case, in this case law enforcement is looking at that social media company yubo? >> reporter: that's right. yubo is prominently known for live streaming making it difficult for officials to track. the app is also not typically on law enforcement's radar because some say it's primarily a dating app for teenagers. in this case were any of the suspect's posts alone enough to n
