and robin wright is fellow at the u.s.titute of peace as well as a contributing writer for the "new yorker" magazine. we welcome all three of you back to the program. beef talking 'little elliott about the president shifting language how he talks about terrorism extremism. what i want to ask the three of you is how much of a shift in policy is what president trump is saying in his, particularly in that speech in saudi arabia. how much of a shift in policy would that be? >> there is a shift, i would say from the obama policy which was much more open to friendship or better relationship with iran and was not casting iran as a central problem in the middle east. in saudi arabia, the president said very much, iran is the problem, the king of saudi arabia then said the same thing, iran is the problem. now of course we're hearing it from prime minister netanyahu. this isn't a change i would say from bush policy actually but these are changes from obama policy which was centered on improving the relationship with iran. >> woodruf

robin wright, can these countries drive out the extremists to a large degree, and will they? >> well, militarily there's been a lot of progress made over the last eight months, for example, in iraq and some in syria against isis. but the reality is that these extremist movements have affiliates all over north africa and south asia. they have lone wolf cells in europe and we believe maybe in the united states. that there is the danger of a broader phenomena that is the product of alienation, marginalization, whether it's in the west or at home. that there aren't the broad solutions. and that's why president trump's speech was dealing with the v y veneer of extremism. we're in the third generation and this is a problem that you can't just use a bullet to solve. and that's why i think the idea of creating whether it's a military coalition or one that deals with cyber security, if you don't have the kinds of basic solutions that deal with the most volatile region in the world, then you're not going to solve the problem of extremism. at one point president trump also said that thi

let's discuss that with robin wright, a fellow at the u.s. e and wood row wilson center for scholars. micha michael hanlin is here. guys, with the time we have left, what is the most important thing, robin, that you are watching for on this very big trip? >> well, i think a number of thing. first of all, we're trying to see what he's going to do in creating a new coalition, the so-called nato version in the arab world to do a number of things. to confront iran and create a new kind of regional coalition that is active in providing its own security rather than always relying on the united states. in isreal we'll see if he's going to be able to get the palestinians and israelis to start on yet another path toward peace. this is going -- the president has said publicly that he thinks it's not quite as difficult as others have made it which i think a lot of previous presidents might disagree with. in the vatican he's going to try to repair the kind of tensions with the pope. they've been engaged in a twitter war or a twitter kind of little conflic
