robinson, how do you feel about this issue? >> being an operational commander in the department previously, i never expected the sheriff to be the one walking around with a gun. i see it as a non-issue. i see it as his staff being dissatisfied with him. so they're looking for anything that creates a bad image. the bigger issue is here is that the sheriff is our public safety officer. certainly, it would look good to the department if he could qualify successfully. but i don't think that's the thing that motivates the operation of the department. >> you should also note that tabloid way -- the chronicle, which isn't the first time, has sort of advanced this issue nearly two weeks before an election. the chronicle did this before with the tragedy of miss steinly when many times we asked them to print retractions and corrections and they did not. that's reflective of a changing san francisco. we shouldn't tolerate the kind of bad journalism -- >> what do you mean by changing san francisco? >> i think i let my friends here to weigh

mason robinson was just 1.5 years old, found dead on sunday. he was pronounced dead at a local hospital. this morning police are trying to piece together what happened in those moments leading up to his death. they have in custody this morning -- we want to show you his mug shot, the 26-year-old lord pardo. they have charged him with second degree murder. he lives here on long island where neighbors were stunned to hear of his arrest on monday. >> it's very sad. babies can't help themselves. you can't kill a baby. the most ridiculous thing to hear. sad thing. >> reporter: now at this point, investigators are not revealing the relationship between the suspect and the little boy. again, he was found unresponsive on sunday, later pronounced dead at an area hospital here on long island. the 26-year-old arrested in connection with his death expected to be arraigned here on long island later today. reporting live this morning, janelle burrell, cbs 2 news. >> all right. thank you. >>> time is now 43:00 2 . time for traffic and weather on -- 4:32. time

the toddler, identified as 17 month old mason robinson. now robinson is said to be the child of his girlfriend. police say she left the toddler with the man when she went to work on sunday. according to police, pardo had been watching the toddler about six to eight times over the last w months, and he himself is the fathereo ff a three week old daughter. now, as i said, the news conference that wrapped up a short time ago didn't specify exactly why pardo may have attacked the child. pardo himself has no criminal record, and police say there's no record of any domestic cidents involving he and his girlfriend. pard 's lawyer told reporters this is simple a tragic accident. he believes the child fell off a bed, causing the massive injuries that led to his death. again, police and prosecutors did not specify here what may have prompted the 26-year-old to attack the toddler, we're hoping to have more on the story later for you t is afternoon when our news begins tonight at 5:00. for now, greg cergol, news 4, new york. >>> its been another blood
