rob robyn curnow is in johannesburg. what is the latest on his-now? i think the latest is that he's back again in hospital with a lung infection, this is essentially pneumonia, it's the fourth time this year and i think the reason this is different, the reason people might be a little bit more concerned is the language that is coming out from the government. they said in a statement that he's in a serious but stable condition. they have told us that he's breathing on his own but the use of that word serious is significant because this is a lot of tightly controlled information around mandela's health so the fact that they're pointing to such a condition and the fact that he is not undergoing routine tests which is what they sometimes use is an indication that perhaps he isn't doing so well. >> the fact he is breathing on his own provides perhaps a glimmer of hope here, though. we've heard that mandela's wife is at his bedside. do you know if there's any other family there? officials are being tight-lipped at this point. any other information? >> his w

you see what robyn started. her issues with tori, she was just a regular mom and she was working. and then all of a sudden she had to suddenly become an expert. and your conversation changes. and i think the important thing to know is that when you're dealing with children, especially young children, like the kids we have here today, everything that they absorb-- especially around the age of seven-- six, seven-- they start to make meaning about themselves, and they start to separate themselves from life. and they say, "well, if this happened to me, then is must mean this about me." it sticks in their unconscious. and then that stays in their conversation, pretty much for the rest of their lives unless they change it. so it's important that we make sure that conversation is a healthy one and a positive one. - mm-hmm. yeah. i think it's amazing. all the moms here are advocates for their children. it's amazing. i wanted to ask the doctor. what else do we need to know about allergies? why is it on the rise? - well,

robyn, what do we know about mr. mandela and his condition?bout that, we don't get a lot of information, very limited information coming from the government. it's 1:30 a.m. south african time this morning, nelson mandela's condition deteriorated seriously enough for his doctors who live with him to take him to hospital. he's suffering from the recurring lung infection which is essentially pneumonia and remember his home is like an intensive care unit so the fact they felt his condition was so bad he had to go to hospital is indicative of the seriousness of this. that said we have heard in the last hour or so from the presidential spokesperson that he is breathing on his own which of course is good news. >> who is there with him? we see this video from april he's surrounded by family members, maybe some close friends but who is with him today? >> reporter: well today we understand his wife is by his bed, also probably some close family members but this is a high care unit in this hospital. he's going to be very, very closely monitored. his doct

robyn kurnow is joining us live from johannesburg, any more on his condition, if family is with him, any other details? >> reporter: nothing. i mean, we've been talking about this for 12 hours now, haven't we? and we've heard absolutely nothing else coming from authorities here. essentially that one line saying he was serious but stable and that his condition had deteriorated in the early hours of saturday morning. beyond that we don't know a lot. i think there's a reason for that. the south african government and mandela's family have always can very, very quick to limit information about his health. they say it's about protecting his privacy. but what is interesting, i must say, fredricka, that a few months ago a photograph and some videos were leaked to the press here of nelson mandela. the most recent ones we have of him, because he hasn't been in public since 2010. have a look at this video. you can see just how frail he is. he looks quite dazed. he looks quite bewildered, he looks quite confused. he certainly doesn't look very well. he certainly looks very, very old. he's 94, o

robyn kurnow what is the latest?the first time since he was released from custody in february. literally hiding out, keeping a low profile at his uncle's home for the past three months. he seemed quite emotionally blank. certainly none of the emotion that sobbing, crying, we saw during the bail hearing. briefly in court here today, ten minutes, just a postponement to august. >> what was his demeanor in court today? >> reporter: he looked sad, quite blank. i saw him last week in his home when i went to interview his uncle and he had a beard last week, obviously shaved it. came into court quite clean shaven. doesn't look as skinny. hasn't lost as much weight as he has during the bail hearing. he is doing a lot of gym during date at home, sort of pumping iron from that point of view, his family and those around him, trying to get him physically, emotional emotionally, spiritually prepared for the process which could take about three years. a long process, many people noting that oscar pistorius had support of his family

"the final struggle." we are unclear on the exact details of his medical condition except the fact that he is still critical, doesn't seem to be getting better. beyond that, south africans don't have a lot of information. a lot of them coming here quietly leaving flowers or letters, hand written notes from children, balloons at the side of this entrance. paying their respects in a quiet, calm way. also, critically, i must add, there has been an increase in security outside this hospital. this road we are standing on has blocked off at both entrances barricading by police vehicles, an increase in the number of policemen guarding the entrance to this hospital. so there is a shift in activity as well. all in all, though, south africans just wai

robyn curnow joins us with the latest developments from pretoria.ng. >> reporter: this much we know. he has got steadily worse over the 18 days he's been in this hospital behind me. so much so, the government coming out the last 12 to 24 hours saying he is in a critical condition. no real details, though, on what his condition is in terms of the medical issues. we know he has a lung infection, essentially pneumonia, beyond that, not very much. i spoke to his daughter over the weekend who said that he is comfortable, that she thinks that he is at peace with himself. also, just remember this is nelson mandela. he still has a very strong fighting spirit. when i put it to her, is this the end? is this his final battle? she said, she doesn't know. only god knows. if it is, nelson mandela himself will bow out in the way he chooses. a lot of anxiety here in south africa, a lot of sadness as people wait for more details, more information on nelson mandela's health. >> the eyes of the world certainly watching. robyn curnow in pretoria, thank you. >>> the tim
