six years ago, a nine-year-old girl and her twin brother were killed at a school bus stop in rochester, indiana. a fourth child, just 11 years old, was seriously injured. 40 years ago, mount pleasant, pennsylvania, five people including a child died in a multivehicle crash on the pennsylvania turnpike. 50 others were injured. i was on scene for that investigation. three years ago in phoenix, arizona, four people were killed and 11 injured when a commercial motor vehicle struck a queue of passenger vehicles at 63 miles an hour. i could go on. in each case, we determined that v2x technology could have prevented the crash. today the ntsb has 10 open safety recommendations focused on protecting all road users in vehicles and outside vehicles, which has never been more critical as pedestrian deaths have soared across the u.s. since 2013. our most recent recommendation from mount pleasant calls on dot to take a leadership role to implement a plan for nationwide vehicle connected technology. we issued that recommendation because we fervently believe strong, clear due to leadership -- d.o.t. l
