rock, arkansas. governor, four years ago, right after the iowa caucuses, you were on "this week." great to have you back again. >> it's nice to be back. thank you for having me today, george. >> did you see anything last night to slow mitt romney down? >> no, if last night was a nascar race, mitt romney had a couple of laps on everybody, he just had to keep from hitting the wall. when his car came off the track last night there was no dents in it. one of those kind of unexpected debates. because i think everybody thought that it was going to be a pile-up and that mitt romney's car would be right in middle of it. it appeared that everybody was a little hesitant of going after him directly. i think everyone who watched the debate was surprised by that. >> how do you explain that? >> you know, i don't explain it. it's inexplicable. the person who's clearly the front-runner who has leads not only in new hampshire but surprisingly in south carolina, who could well be on his way to running the tables in the first several states and if that happens, it will be very difficult to catch up

after iowa, he dropped like a rock. as we get closer to primary day, gingrich is surging, again. a big question swirls around his campaign. a new tactic for newt gingrich on the question of his relationship of his ex-wife. is it valid to bring it up in the campaign. mr. speaker, are personal issues valid to bring up? >> his refusal to answer was different from thursday when asked by a man attending the south carolina rally. >> i have been open about the mistakes i have made. >> then he talked about it with reporters. >> it's an issue icon front every time it comes up. people seem to be satisfied with it. watch the audience. >> during the last two days, his crowds have grown bigger and louder as the stakes get higher. on the eve of the iowa caucuses and new hampshire primary, gingrich knew he wasn't going to win. now he believes victory in south carolina is within his grasp. >> if we win on saturday, with your help, i believe i will become the nominee because i think south carolina, in fact, has an enormous impact. you have picked the winner every single primary since 1980. i beli

with south carolina looming we saw rock hall and what with mitt romney's mexican test >> momentum following victories in iowa and new shafhampshire. this is before huntsman dropped out of the race. south carolina from three other guys competing for the social conservative vote. perhaps the biggest surprise a week out from next saturday's primary aside from the huntsman withdrawal is newt gingrich's political obit air reappears prema sur prema -- premature. real clear politics has him in second place trailing romney -- with santorum and ron paul. they had romney in 28 percent with gingrich second with 28 percent and paul and santorum in third and fourth place. an american research group has romney out in front with 29 percent. gingrich is a closer second at 25 percent. with paul a good third with 20 percent. >> and de shane writes. thank you for joining us. i understand your paper just endorsed john huntsman for the republican primary in your state next saturday. i mean are you feeling embarrassed, frustrated, what is up? >> well,ing fortunately i am not a member of the editorial board. o our editorial board

iowa, yes, it involves a drinking game. that clip later in the show. first the news live at 5:30 a.m. at 30 rock in new york city. with only four days to go until the voting in new hampshire, the republican presidential field is gearing up for two debates this weekend. the focus likely to be on mitt romney. it's the latest suffolk poll that shows the former massachusetts governor carrying 41% support in the state. ron paul has 18%. coming off a strong finish in iowa, rick santorum is up two points, still with just 8% support. behind him, newt gingrich and jon huntsman, the man who spent all his resources inside new hampshire, still down there at 7%. huntsman getting a bit of a boost heading into the weekend. the newspaper "the boston globe globe" is putting its support behind the utah governor saying he offers the republican party a chance to "renew itself." while romney proceeds cautiously, strategically to appease enough constituencies to get himself the nomination, huntsman has been bold. he articulates goals and ideas. that from "the boston globe." after dedicating his campaign efforts exclusively to new hamp
