some of those early morning waves hit rockaway beach pretty hard, taking out a window at the lighthouse restaurant home of the moon raker. >> tremendous waves. >> reporter: powerful waves that came crashing ashore, pockiknoc out a huge picture window in the hotel's banquet room. the same thing happened in january of 2017. this time around, the staff was already on edge. >> when we heard the tides were going to be pretty high, you know, we crossed our fingers, but unfortunately, we got hit again. >> reporter: the city manager says at low tide crews inspected the already-eroded esplanade bluff but found no damage. there are warnings posted about the dangerously-high waves, but it hasn't stopped folks from getting as chose getting close as they can. now the city manager says they will keep both the pacifica pier and beach boulevard closed overnight to reevaluate whether to open all of this tomorrow morning. we'll see how it goes tonight. nbc bay area news. >> amazing to see all that right behind you, thank you, roz. we're hearing a lot of that, a lot of screams. here's a look closeup. our

this video from rockaway beach in pacifica tonight, this could be the roughest surf we've seen in the past two years. >>> paul, these are some pretty ominous warnings. >> if a wave is that high, it's going to go that much farther inland from where the water normally stops. so yes, on some beaches the waves are going to basically take away the beach temporarily once they come crashing in. so use extreme caution if you're going anywhere near the water coming up on sunday. now to the details, it's sunday morning through monday night, a high surf warning. this will be likely the highest surf since january, 2017, so almost two years. swells will run 17 to 21 feet. that's pretty high. breakers above that running 25 to 40 feet or higher. that's pretty high. so yes, it's the real deal at the beach coming up on sunday. not the real deal with this front. we got minimal rain from it and there's not much rain out there now, just a few very light showers over in napa county and sonoma county this evening. futurecast says there will be some showers over the north bay tomorrow morning. much of satur
