they're just firing these rockets indiscriminately. israel doesn't have the luxury about not worrying about where these rockets land. they must respond swiftly in shooting out all rockets or else risk serious harm to its people. in thwarting these rocket attacks, israel depends on what is termed and named the iron dome. it's a missile defense system. but as a number of rockets being launched from gaza continue to surge, israel's iron dome resources are being depleted. last week secretary of defense requested congress allocate millions in emergency funding to help israel's defense system. after weeks of fighting, israel needs these funds to replace the weaponry used to destroy hamas incoming rockets but there is no guarantee israel won't need our help again. mr. president, if this conflict continues for weeks or months, what this funding does do for the time being, though, is provide israel with the resources to continue defending its people from these terrorist attacks. last thursday the republican leader urged the senate to act quickl

a week before that, hamas started a rocket fight. israel has no interest in a rocket war over gaza. unrelenting attacks that israel had to respond to, and the only reason that you aren't seeing dead israeli civilians, two were killed, 2,000 rockets were aimed into israel. imagine if that had happened into the united states. we would be leveling the places from which the rockets game. you know, the united states reacted and the british reacted to the bombing that happened in the blitz in london by turning dresden into rubble and berlin into fine rubble. and firing into tokyo and bombing hiroshima. they could make gaza into rubble in two days. they put soldiers on the ground as to not to did that they suffer high casualties. they are the ones with the moral high ground, if you allow a picture to alter that perception, you are not acting like a secretary of state. >> is there a bigger thing happening in the arab community, with all that's happening in iraq and isis and syria, is there something tying all of that together with hamas? >> certainly, when you are now talking about potentia

these are not 4th of july rockets. these are deadly rockets that kill. you want some protection, and the iron dome provides protection for israel. this joint effort by the united states and israel has been successful. despite 2,000 rocket attacks, the casualties on the israeli side have been minimal, relatively minimal, and it's because of the iron dome defense. what attacks does israel face today? well, they face hamas attacks from gaza. hamas is an organization which the united states characterized as a terrorist organization almost 20 years ago. we know hamas. we know their tactics. what they're doing is putting rocket launchers in civilian neighborhoods near hospitals and apartments and homes and they're launching these missile attacks on israel and daring them to fire back into civilian populations. iron dome protects the israeli population from the missiles being shot by hamas in gaza and now the israelis have invaded gaza to go to the source to stop these rocket attacks. sadly, during the course of this effort in gaza, there have been casualties.

when they discovered a rocket battery that they need to take out because it is firing rockets targetinginnocent civilians they send texts saying, clear out of the area. they try to save the palestinian civilians. they drop from the sky pamphlets on an area that is about to be bombed to take out the rockets that are coming from that area. and the pamphlets say to the civilians, get out. get out because we're going to take out the rockets and you're in harm's way. not only that they have a practice of sending an initial knock bomb. that means the first bomb lands on the roof and makes a knock. doesn't explode. just makes a loud knock. they do that for a reason, so that the people inside the building can look up, can hear the knock and can flee the building so the second missile can take down the building and the rockets that are housed inside that are being used to try to murder innocent civilians. prime minister netanyahu a few weeks ago summed it up very powerfully when he said, israel uses missile defense to defend our citizens. hamas uses its citizens to defend its missiles. now, isra

you know what they did with those rockets? they apparently contacted the authorities to pick them up. you know who the authorities are in gaza? hamas. so that's what israel's dealing with. and we do everything to keep their civilians out of harm's way. but even if we get it right 99% of the time, if 1% of those 2,000 targets are off and 20 missiles go in the wrong place, that's when you have civilian casualties. we regret loss of every civilian life, but the ones who should be responsible for this are hamas for putting their civilians in the way. even egypt blamed hamas for israel having to defend themselves here. look, i understand the mission here is to break up hamas' infrastructure and break up their tunnel system that they have where they're hiding these rockets, et cetera. but for the iron dome, all of those 1600 rockets would have landed in civilian areas within israel. where's the source of this weaponry? is it syria? is it iran? and what do you do about the ultimate source here? do you not have to go to the source to
