see most all of the elevations except the really high ones in california and some of the southern rockies have lost snow on april first - about 75 percent of the snow courses are showing this decline. when you map out these declines, this is this plotted - the trend is plotted from negative to the left and positive to the right that bottom there and elevation is traced on the vertical scale here, so lower is down and higher is up and lower is warming and higher is cooler - you can see the larger losses, of course are occurring to lower to middle elevations in our western areas and that makes sense. those are the areas closer to the freezing level. mr.noels, conducted a study of precipitation gauges across the west where first ofall, climate wise these have been ones that have received snow and they have a fairly substantial record and also they've recorded snow - snow fall, that is they have a snow board or some other ability to record daily snow accumulation and over about the same period as we looked at in the stream gauge network. he shows the ones that have lost and gained in the prec

this is called the burren, which is irish for "rocky country," and it stretches about a hundred square miles. a great way to see the burren up close is to rent a bicycle in the town of ballyvaughn. 300 million years ago, this was the bottom of a tropical sea, where layers of coral and shells collected. eventually, massive rumblings of the earth's crust forced the land above sea level. back in prehistoric times, about 5,000 years ago, people settled here, cleared the land, and grazed animals. they buried their dearly departed in graves like this one, known as poulnabrone dolman or "the hole of the grinding stone." the capstone alone weighs 5 tons. the site was excavated in 1989, and the remains of more than 25 people were found here among scattered pieces of pottery and jewelry. aillwee cave was formed millions of years ago by underground rivers but remained hidden until a local farmer discovered it in 1944. it has more than 3,400 feet of passages. just behind me here you can see the bones of the european brown bear that were found in here, a bear that's been extinct in ireland for well

over toward the northwest a winter storm is going to be dropping into the northern rockies, and that'sng to be producing ample amounts of snow during the overnight hours all the way from montana into the northern end of the four corners. another snowy area we're looking at is this here that's moving across the great lakes region. it is going to be weakening gradually, but dumping heavy snow for a southeastern corner of ontario during the overnight hours. it's actually helping to push that very cold air we were looking at yesterday out of the northeastern corner here. in fact, we've got some pictures coming in from the northeastern u.s. let's take a look now. the area experienced well below freezing temperatures yesterday. new york city recorded minus 14.4 on monday. that's about ten degrees below the seasonal average. two people have died as a result. meanwhile, in washington, d.c. water pipes burst due to the freezing temperatures and thor ju the water just started to cover a major highway. schools closed and also a train stopped running as well. the good news is temperatures are goin
