. >>> meantime at the rockville gun shop where darion aguilar purchased the shotgun he used on saturday, the owners tell our bruce leshan there was no sign that he was any sort of risk. >> reporter: at united gun shop in rockville the owners say the bureau of alcohol, tobacco and firearms called the day of the shooting to tell them the gun was purchased in their store. they remembered aguilar, gave agents his name but say he was so mild mannered they were convinced at first someone must have shot him and stolen the gun. the owners say that aguilar came in looking for an entry level shotgun like this one for home defense. they've actually turned down potential buyers here who made them uncomfortable but say that was not the case with aguilar, no red flags. he was very polite, said please and thank you, no signs of mental illness. he kept asking questions about gun safety. he answered all the questions for the national instant background check correctly and when they submitted his name, it immediately came back telling them they could proceed with the sale. aguilar bought the mossburg 12

this is in rockville. and they say that aguilar came in on december 10. he didn't set off any red flags. no warnings. he seemed like a perfectly normal, mild mannered, shy kind of guy and he was looking for an entry level shotgun. he said for home defense. he filled out the paperwork, the questions about his background and so forth, all the answers correct. they punched his information into the fbi data base. it immediately came back as go ahead, proceed with the sale. and so they sold it to him. now they say that gun store, which only has been open for a few months or so, that they actually have refused to sell to people who they had questions about. but with aguilar, they said they didn't have any questions about him at all. in fact, when the atf called and said that the shotgun used in the murders up in columbia had been purchased at united gun shop, they figured he must have been shot or something himself and had the gun stolen because they couldn't conceive of this mild mannered 19-year- old going and doing something like that. his mother spoke to ou

at united gun shop in rockville, the owners say the bureau of alcohol, tobacco, and firearms called the day of the shooting to tell them the gun was purchased in their store. they remembered aguilar, gave agents his name, but they say he was so mild mannered, they were convinced that someone must have shot him and stolen the gun. the owners say that aguilar came in looking for an entry level shotgun like this one for home defense. they have actually turned down potential buyers here who made them uncomfortable, but that was not the case with aguilar. no red flags. he was very polite. said please and thank you. no signs of mental illness. he kept asking questions about gun safety. >> he answered all the questions for the national instant background check correctly and when they submitted his name, it immediately came back telling them they could proceed with the sale. aguilar bought the 12 gauge, a box of buck shot and a box of bird shot on december 10 and then came back just before christmas to buy another box of bird shot. >> no guns in our house. we have never had guns in our house. >

the students had just left for mcgruder high school in rockville. bruce leshan takes us to the scene of a stretch of road with a bad reputation. >> reporter: this is another horrible crash on a road that has seen more than its fair share of crashes. it happened just a mile or so from magruder high school and just as school was letting out police say everybody involved was school age. there were two cars heading up muncaster mill road at a high rate of speed. we don't know if they were racing, but they collided here where the road narrows and both cars ran off the road. there were three pedestrians on the sidewalk also school age and two of those pedestrians were hit, one of them killed. >> we do believe speed was a factor in this collision. the roy,adwa the character of the roadway, is such that it narrows from two lanes to one lane d anwith speed inbeg a factor we're looking at all those conditions to see if we can determine the cause. >> reporter: students at magruder say somehow the message has just not gotten out to kids not to race, not to spee
