when i was in college, i led a protest after rodney king decision and when they tear gassed the atlanta university center, a tear gassed in part because we sat opposed with the housing development with four young people who couldn't imagine they would be able to attend bellmen and morehouse, but at what i realized was that people who were tear gassing us didn't see a difference. i may have a degree in a few years, but i was still just another black kid. that moment of protest, whether it was a protest that was acceptable because it was a quiet march to city hall or something louder or more ruckus, that protest was powerful, but so too for me was the vote i was able to cast in the next election to replace city council members who had didn't think did their job and to help lift up those who i thought did a good job. voting is an extraordinary form of protest because it's how we help people who were supposed to cs and value us that they did not do their job, but it's also how we call attention to the issues we need especially if we're lucky enough to live in states with citizen initiatives
