joining us now on the phone is josh rogan, senior national correspondent for the daily beast.nator mccain. what did he tell you about this escalating deterioration in ukraine? >> reporter: yes, thanks, wolf. i've just finished a phone conversation with john mccain. this is new information first on cnn. in his statement he said that america has several serious policy options to confront vladimir putin's aggression in the ukraine. in our phone call he laid out what he thought those options were. he believes first of all the congress and administration should work together to use a law already on the books which allows the u.s. to sanction russian human rights violators. john mccain believes that law should be applied to senior russian leadership and that the invasion of ukraine as he terms it should be considered a human rights violation. that would immediately allow the united states to sanction russian leaders, institute visa bans, asset freezes and other punitive measures. john mccain believes that president obama's threat not to attend the g 8 summit in june in sochi is not
