i want to go to roger first. how did we catch him? >> by using craigslist and then using an email address and ultimately a phone number. that began a process a that ultimately led to shahzad's arrest. what the fbi and the nypd did is pull the string on his electronic communications after interviewing the individual who sold shahzad the nissan pathfinder. that was the first big break in the case. once that happened, then they're able to quickly move to the point where through additional phone number checking and between pakistan and here, ultimately led them to shahzad and that's why he's in custody today. >> and how did we stop him from flying away? how did we catch him on the plane? who gets responsibility for catching him? >> the last line of defense there was the department of homeland security. it was the customs and border police. they were the ones that picked him up. i think there's going to be some discussion about how did he get from the fbi monitoring him, surveying him, to the point where he ultimately got on the plane. the

roger cressey, let's talk about shahzad's links to pakistan.ecause there's more and more indication. they don't have hard evidence, obviously, but more and more indication that he was not a lone wolf. >> i think that's right, andrea p p the fact he's admitted to going to a training camp in waziristan, that's not some outward bound boy scout event. what we still don't know, i believe shahzad is going to admit to it and we'll be able to confirm it, was he directed or was he inspired? once we get that we can determine was it pakistani taliban, was a combination and mix of cal btaliban and al qaed. it's going to be an important question. i still think the bigger question is when was he radicalized and why was he radicalized? was he coerced into doing this? did he do it because family members told him to do it? was he radicalized because of u.s. policy? there are multiple possibilities. we're going to find out from shahzad when he finally talks. >> or economic concerns. let's talk about the possibility that he was both inspired and directed. >> mm-h

there was some good police work there as roger indicated. one element that he didn't mention, is you know, it started with getting the v.i.n. numb on that nissan truck that had the bomb. and they, it had been, it had been deleted or altered on the front of the car. but the cops went under and found the p.i.n. number, the v.i.n. number underneath. that's how they were able to link it up with the craigslist -- app. >> the story to tell is that you have a vehicle identification number, a v.i.n. number hidden throughout your car apparently, right? >> yes. >> it's there a numb of places, you can't find all the places it is. the police will always be one step ahead of you of finding a place on your car for the vehicle identification number. >> basically, this was good police work, good detective work, good intelligence work. putting all of these pieces together. but there are some questions about him getting on the plane. my understanding is that the, his inclusion on the no-fly list was an added, wasn't downloaded by the airlines quickly enough.

back to talk with us, steve rogers.was also a former member of the fbi national joint terrorism task force. also with us james gordon, reporter for the "new york daily news." steve, we all fly. and as we hear this, we expect a no-fly list to stop things like that. i think we're thinking no fly list, neon lights if somebody shows up at the counter. does it go down like that, or not? >> exactly, mike. ironically, it was this terrorist that showed us a gap in our security system. but let me bring some comfort to you. when i worked with the joint terrorism task force ten years ago, there was little or no information sharing between agencies. as a result, we now have information sharing, and it resulted in this guy's arrest. the timeliness of getting that information out on these no-fly lists is now being corrected. so, yep, there's a gap there, but they're going to correct it. >> james, any other explanations? because, again, i think viewers think no fly means just that. and it's an immediate exchange of information. sounds
