another central figure with ties to this network of extremist groups was roger stone, a political consultant and the long time confidante of president trump. he pardoned both flynn and stone in the weeks between the election on november 3rd and january 6th. in the same time frame, stone communicated with both the proud boys and the oath keepers regularly. the committee obtained encrypted content from a group chat called friends of stone, fos, including stone, rhodes, tario, and alexander, the chat focused on various pro trump events in november and december of 2020 as well as january 6th. as you can see here, stewart rhodes himself urged the friends of stone to have people go to their state capitols if they cannot make it to washington for the first million maga march on november 14th. friends of roger stone had a significant presence at multiple pro trump events after the election, including in washington on december 12th. on that day, stewart rhodes called for donald trump to invoke martial law promising bloodshed if he did not. >> know that you are with him, that he does not do it now whi

another central figure amortized to this network of extremist groups was roger stone, a political consultantngtime confidant of president trump. he pardoned both michael flynn and stone in the weeks between the election, on november 3, and january 6. in the same timeframe, stone communicated with both the proud boys and oath keepers, regularly. the committee obtained encrypted content from a group chat called friends of stone. this includes stone, roads, [ indiscernible ], and allie alexander. a focus on various approachable events in november and december of 2020, and january 6. as you can see here, stuart rhodes urged the friends of stone to go to the state capitals, they cannot make it to washington for the first million m.a.g.a. march. these friends had a significant presence at multiple drug prompt -- pro trump events. on the day, he said to invoke martial law, promising bloodshed if he did not. >> is not from you, that you are with him, that he does not do it now, while he is commander-in-chief, we will have to do it ourselves, later, in a much more desperate, in a much more bodywork.

we don't know who was talking to whom, but we know roger stone was also at the warwick hotel. we also know that he was asked -- the chief of staff of was asked to to the warwick hotel, and it took someone like cassidy hutchinson to say look, you shouldn't be going there, and he still went by phone. we don't know what was said there, but there was a whole bunch of tantalizing little details that came out in the course of that hearing that make you wonder what was going on at the warwick hotel. >> but elie, does this make it harder for the committee to get the information they were seeking from steve bannon, the reason, just to remind everybody that he was just found guilty is because he didn't hand over documents and he didn't show up, though he was subpoenaed. will they ever get to see the information that they wanted now that he's been convicted? >> it's important to note, this is about punishment. this is not about forcing somebody to testify. steve bannon will not testify unless he just has a unilateral change of heart. this is an important win for doj and for congress but

now both roger stone on the left there and michael flynn and right there, both of them were convicted of crimes during the trump administration and then pardoned by trump. both of them are known to have used members from these paramilitary groups, oath keepers in the proud boys. at trump rallies and in mr. stone's case on the day january 6th attack itself. there's no crime in decorating your entourage with dressed up fake soldiers because it makes you feel important, but to the extent that the presence of these groups with roger stone and with mike flynn, up to and on the day of january six, in a case of the trump when hayes was in contact with those groups, and using those groups for the purposes of trying to use force against the government. using force to overthrow or stop the function of the government, that is a crime. that is a very serious crime. that's sedition, or seditious conspiracy. if you were part of directing those groups, aiming and pointing those groups that you knew would use force at your suggestion, if you were part of them derived deliberately suggesting that it w

and some of these players that people like roger stone, michael flynn, rudy giuliani were in touch withdy been sentenced on criminal charges of seditious conspiracy, so i think it raises the specter of what the department of justice is potentially looking at. and then in the end, they wrapped it all up by putting an extremely human touch on things by showing that trump's words directly impacted the people who ultimately breached the capitol and the people who were affected as a result of that breach. we ended with a really extraordinary goose bump-inducing moment of watching stephen ayres, an insurrectionist, who went up to these police officers, we know gonell, michael fanone, harry dunn, the widow of officer aaron smith and officer hodges and apologized to them and expressed his condolences. obviously, you know, it remains to be seen whether those officers accept his apology, but it was a really surreal and emotional moment in the room. >> roller coaster is the perfect word for it. harry litman, i found myself watching, and i know trump supporters, and so i found myself watching mr. a

some of those connections were with roger stone. the former national security advisor pool when he actually did testify before the committee answered basic questions like this. >> do you believe the violence on january 6 with justified? >> can i get clarification? >> asking both. >> do you believe the violence was justified morally? >> i plead the fifth. >> do you think it was justified legally? >> fifth. >> do you believe in the peaceful transition of the power in the united states of america? >> the fifth. >> that was not something that you need to plead the fifth on in any situation. it's pretty unbelievable. he obviously didn't want to talk but more and more people are talking. as these hearings have unfolded -- a source close to the committee says it is receiving new information on what they deem important information on a daily basis. it's so important that it got incorporated into their plans. that hearing was considered for thursday night. it was expected to focus on what trump was doing and not doing during the 197 minutes.

you've got donald trump here, and then you've got roger stone and michael flynn, here. how do you handle that. what is important to do in terms of connecting these three? >> the connective tissue between the oath keepers and proud boys and trump, meadows, the white house, city powell, steve bannon, et cetera, is probably going to be roger stone who we know, hired domestic violence extremist to be his security around january 5th and january 6th, and they were at the war room at the willard hotel and we know from cassidy hutchinson that mark meadows wanted to go to the war room on january 5th, so what i expect to see is all of those lengths from the white house to the willard to the proud boys and oath keepers and if they can make a compelling case that this was all one coordinated effort, coordinated attack, then, all of a sudden, what you get is the white house, direct connected to the riot, the rioters on january 6th. this was part of a larger plan to overthrow the election. and i think the committee needs to make sure that that is always front and center. donald trump

roger stone was seen with the proud boys in january 6th.the totality those, how damning is this? >> well what we hoped the january six committee is going to show is very clear lines of connection between those who instigated the violence at the capitol and those who organized and funded it, including people inside the white house. so i am hoping that the hearing on tuesday is going to provide further evidence to underscore the threat that not only existed on january the 6th but in all frankness continues to exist against our democracy. january the 6th was just the beginning. we are continuing to see threats of violence and activity by the proud boys and the oath keepers at the local and state levels across the country. we need to be taking this threat very seriously. >> what do you make of the oath keepers leader stewart rhodes saying that he will testify if it is live? is that reliable -- do you think he's reliable witness? or is this again him trying to use the platform of these hearings for publicity? >> i think mr. rhodes would very muc
