sonoma county where the brief tornado did occur just southeast of two rock which is southwest of rohnert park, northwest of petaluma. we can look at what the radar looked like when the tornado touched down at 11:00 this morning. the red and green, we're in velocity mode on radar. you can see which way the raindrops are moving. we're looking at the red area where the raindrops are moving away from the radar site in davis and the green area where the raindrops are moving towards, the center of circulation. how did this happen today? the way the winds were aligned in the atmosphere, winds at surface level and winds farther up in the atmosphere moving two different speeds. that gets the air turning over horizontally. that's not rare. what's different today is we had showers that grew into thunderstorms. there was instability in the atmosphere around the bay area. as the thunderstorms grew, the updraft of the growing clouds takes the horizontal circulation and tilts it into a vertical circulation. as that vertical circulation gets more established and reaches down closer to ground level, first you

nbc's sergio quintana is in rohnert park with what's happening in the north bay. >> reporter: here in the north bay, the wind has been the persistent issue that people have been having to deal with. but there was a strong burst of storms that passed through the area around 1:30 or so. that storm system was predicted to produce waterspouts off the coast and very strong winds here. it did slow down freeway traffic for a while, but it didn't cause any serious issues. for the most part, there has been some flooding in some of the rural areas, but that's mostly because of rains from the last couple of days. and those are localized flooding in areas where people are kind of used to that already. so it didn't produce any serious issues. now, there have been some power outages because of the wind. pg&e crews have been pretty quick to react to those and have already restored power to some of those neighborhoods that have been affected. in rohnert park, i'm sergio quintana, nbc bay area news. >>> coming up in a few minutes, we are live in tahoe. how much snow and when is the best time to go? th

when we have really heavy rains and that's near the corner of rohnert park express way and stony point. now, if you look over there, you will see that stony point road in earlier today. there was high water here. and as a result of that high water, it was difficult, if not impossible to get through. the other thing i want you to look at is the clouds out there. if you take a look, you can see there's blue sky, but you can also see underneath. that coming our way is a dark cloud, which is very likely a cell that's going to drop water. and there there are several of those around here. so expect more rain to be sure. for now, what we also want to do is tell you about something that we shot earlier this morning up in sonoma county as well. and that was near the corner of where highway 121 actually makes a left turn or a right turn, depending on which way you're going into the town of sonoma. now now, this is the important thing. highway 121 connects sears point to sonoma and then off to napa valley, and as a result, there was flooding there at a place called schellville. and the problem wi

the theft happened in rohnert park thursday afternoon. a doorbell camera catches a woman carrying an empty box, appearing to deliver a package to a home. she leaves it and takes an amazon package left on the porch was at least the second time she targeted that day. investigators say that she drove a red fiat 500. anyone with information is asked to call rohnert park police. the martinez refinery is reporting another accidental release of coke dust today. contra costa health crews posted about the incident just before 2:00 in the afternoon, saying they heard about the release at 118 this afternoon. a hazmat team responded to assess the site. the health agency reports that there is no evidence of any offsite impact of the petroleum coke dust to people in nearby communities. contra costa county supervisors have previously called the number of incidents at the refinery unprecedented and not normal. >> well, lots of sunshine so far this weekend. in fact, temperatures you probably noticed a bit of a warm up out there with more 60s to report tom

let's look at the video of the tornado touching down near two rock which is southwest of rohnert park and northwest of petaluma. fortunately it's in a sparsely populated part of sonoma county, but that is a tornado hitting the ground. this is video courtesy of "the press democrat," somebody johnny on the spot capturing that video and spreading it around. let's look again at first alert doppler and where the tornado occurred. we'll zoom in for a closer look where this happened in rural sonoma county. there is a flood advisory in effect for that location. let's go over to our floor map and i can give you a 3d perspective where this occurred. we have to walk up to the north bay and it is the hilly terrain that favors development of this type of brief tornado touchdown. again, the mountainous terrain to the west of highway 101. if we look at the radar scan, it confirms the atmosphere was spinning in that part of sonoma county. this radar view shows a little area of red and green side by side here in velocity mode. we're tracking basically the direction the raindrops are moving. red indica

zero visibility up to rohnert park. some thick fog areas that had a yesterday are good to go a little bit out towards stockton. but napa and fairfield, which was socked in yesterday not not today. but boy to the north. yes there's still some there yet. that easterly breeze coming in off the oakland berkeley hills and right along the san mateo coast is making for some blustery conditions. half moon bay, 16 east at 2526. sfo is east at 14. and when you get that, you get warm temps on the coast. i'll say pacifica is 51, montara beach 54. pillar points 55. half moon bay is 52. i should add that bolinas at point reyes and bodega bay are all in the 50s as well, so there's some big spreads in the east wind, and that east wind will make for some mild temperatures. berkeley is 55 with that east wind, so around berkeley, el cerrito, emeryville , uh, albany, you can get some warm temps and that that east northeast breeze coming in off of albany heads right over to golden gate fields and then out to the golden gate bridge. uh, high
