let's get into the new details of this storm beginning with al roker. we've been watching your updates throughout the morning on "today." but what have you seen from dorian both as the day has progressed and as we're getting more information? >> the interesting thing is that this really not much. it pretty much has been almost stationery in the last five, six hours really. the one big change is the drop in the wind speed. it is now down to 155 miles per hour. but that forward movement, i mean, i can walk faster than this. basically we're looking at hurricane warnings now from just north of west palm beach to north of melbourne. plus hurricane watches up to jacksonville. we have tropical storm watches also. and of course hurricane warnings over the northern islands of the bahamas. here 130-mile-per-hour winds by late tomorrow night. it is justakes a turn, but it just hugs the coast. the greatest shot at some landfall will be sometime on friday as it cuts across cape hatteras. we may see another landfall there. but in the meantime, it stays offshore. and

roker, what are we seeing? >> here's the deal. there you can see this is the path where we finally saw landfall in america in cape hatteras. interestingly enough, it's the fourth landfall. it ran -- it made three land falls in the bahamas, of course creating massive destruction. and now there it goes. this is the latest from the national hurricane center. still a category one storm. it's 50 miles northeast of cape hatteras. the winds are still 90 miles per hour, but here's the big change. finally getting picked up by that trough northeast. it's moving northeast at 17 miles per hour. so this things is now finally starting to book. look at this. we have tropical storm watches all the way up into new finland. we've got hurricane watches for parts of new england. and we're -- i should say tropical storm storm warnings for parts of new england. and then we still have the tropical storm watches and warnings as you come down the south from ocean city to norfolk tropical storm warning and hurricane warnings down to the south around cape h

. >> joining us now is nbc's own al roker. welcome. tell us where is this thing headed at this point? >> it is starting to make its way up the coast. ali, when we talked yesterday it was pretty much stationary and now it's finally made a move. over 24 hours it moved about 12 miles and as you can see to mariana's point we are now seeing tropical force winds coming from melbourne, fort pierce, west palm beach and even close to it down in miami as this system progresses. so let's take a look at the latest location. category 2 storm. 110 miles east of fort pierce, florida. that is important because the tropical force winds extend out 175 miles from the center of that storm. it is moving northwest at 3 m les per hour and so west palm beach all the way to just east of charleston. we have tropical storm warnings inland. and that speaks to the idea that extending away from the coast line and further inland. so we'll be watching that very closely all the way to cape hatteras we have hurricane watches up. those will probably be upgraded as we ge
