al roker is here to start us off. al, what are we looking at? >> lester, as you mentioned this is going to be a rapidly intensifying storm. right now idalia is just off the tip of cuba, 70-mile-per-hour winds moving north at 8. here's what we have. hurricane warnings from port st. joe to south of tampa. those will expand. the path of the storm will bring it up and probably landfall sometime early wednesday. could be as a category 3 storm, somewhere between tallahassee and cedar key. we are looking for winds that could top 118 miles per hour. bringing down trees, communication, damaging buildings. as far as that storm surge, that wall of water, life-threatening inundation, roads washed out, upwards of 7 to 11 feet, especially around cedar key. and of course tornadoes can't be ruled out from cross city including tampa and sarasota. rainfall amounts, lester, we're talking heavy rain from the florida panhandle to the carolinas. locally four to eight inches with as much as a foot of rain. lester? >> all right. al roker, thank you. and our priscilla t

al roker is with us. al, how serious is this storm >> well, lester, we haven't seen a tropical storm make landfall in southern california since 1939 this is a rapidly intensifying storm, already a category 2, with 110-mile-per-hour winds. it's moving northwest at 14 miles per hour the water temperature, six degrees above normal so, this could be a category 4 by storm at noon it hits a pool of colder water right along the shoreline, but that could help waken it, bring it down to a two, and then i landfall, but it could still maintain its tropical characteristics, and that could be a big, big problem. heavy rain and winds locally, lester, five to eight inches of rain and the month of august is the driest month in southern california they get no rain, so, this could be big problems. >> all right, and separately, you're keeping a close watch on wildfires in canada. >> absolutely. we've got over 1,000 wildfires burning right now, and the smoke forecast brings that from winnipeg, all the way down into chicago,

but first, al roker, what are you seeing in terms of the storm track right now? >> lester, idalia starting to rapidly intensify right now 300 miles south of tallahassee. 100-mile-per-hour winds moving north now quicker at 16 miles per hour. 15 million people under hurricane warnings, watches, and tropical storm watches and warnings as well from florida all the way into the southeast. by tomorrow morning, 9:00 a.m., a category 3 storm coming onshore. the good news is this is going to be a rapid mover, but not before leaving some significant impacts. for example, storm surge up to 15 feet, especially right around cedar key with surge accompanied by large waves which cause beach erosion. wind gusts from 50 to 95 miles per hour, dangerous with trees falling. possible power outages from wilmington to sarasota. a risk of tornadoes wrapped in rain, hard to see. rainfall amounts 12 inches or more in the florida big bend, and that's going to lead to significant flooding from cross city all the way to wilmington. lester? >> all right. we've been talking how dangerous that
