former george bush press secretary ari fleischer, political analyst roland martin. let's talk about what's happening today. is this surge of newt gingrich so powerful he could win? >> absolutely. >> do you think he will? >> i predict newt gingrich will win south carolina. more than what i predict i have talked to several leading south carolina republicans who know the state in and out. to a person they all thought newt would win by a small margin. i spoke to a national pollster who thinks newt will win big. the ground started shifting monday at the debate. the shift accelerated last night. i think newt wins. >> eric, do you agree with the prediction? also, what went wrong for romney? >> what went wrong was the debate on monday. his debate last night sealed it for him. newt gingrich had huge momentum after monday the polling shifted dramatically for newt gingrich. last night locked it in. there is another key detail. this is also a proxy fight between the governor who endorsed mitt romney and the speaker of the house who endorsed newt gingrich. the speaker has fired

let's check in with eric erickson and roland martin in miami in south beach yet again at a bar.'t know how they keep wrangling these assignments. eric erickson, is this a story just of newt gingrich being outspent in florida? what else went wrong for him in this state? >> you know, a lot went wrong. but i think the advertising has more to do with him than a lot of people want to credit. south carolina was the first race even including the 2008 races where the non-romney candidates were at parity with mitt romney. 15 to 3, 15 to 1? you can't keep up with that. florida is a huge media market. advertising in the state like florida is very necessary. you can't go door-to-door all over the state. if you can't even come close to parity, and that's not close at all, there's no way you can win. >> but also, anderson, we also have to own up to something. that is mitt romney had a strong infrastructure in this state. newt gingrich did not have a lot of money early on, so it's not like he had lots of boots on the ground. the bottom line is, if you're going to have a campaign team on the gr

let's go over to erick erickson and roland martin who have the liberty tab room in columbia in southina. eric, i've been reading your tweets tonight. you think the rise in gingrich has a lot to do with gingrich but also another factor here. what do you think it is? >> reporter: i think there's a resistance from base voters in south carolina and elsewhere. the electorate is conservative, they feel this should be a nomination fight and not a cor nation and they're pushing back on a lot of the washington republican crowd who have been telling them you have to take mitt romney. they're not willing to take mitt romney. he got less votes in 2012 in iowa than he got in 2008 and it looks like i would think based on the ground and the movement here and so many men turning out today he's probably going to lose south carolina. >> roland you agree with that? >> to some extent but here's what i'm looking for. newt gingrich wins, i want to see how fast erick's wife texts him to tell him he's sleeping on the couch. she will the no be happy if he wins. that's what i'm looking for. >> including my wi

joining me now, conservative blogger, crystal wright, and cnn political analyst, roland martin. est battle of the super pacs has been between newt gingrich and mitt romney. roland, you know, when you're talking about these negative ads, and they're meant to be at arm's length from the candidates, what damage is being done to the system? what are the candidates saying makes them okay? >> well, first of all, the american people buy into negative ads. they absolutely work. the only reason newt gingrich is upset is because he didn't have all the money for his super pacs in iowa to run against mitt romney. his money didn't come in until north carolina and now south carolina. yes, i do believe when you have this much money, when it is anonymous, you don't know who is behind it, they are putting the kind of money in, it is damaging because you are moving the people out of this process, but we've known for a long time, money has always ruled politics. >> and then the candidate, crystal, with the most money is going to get the most negative ads on, and therefore influences the most people
