in 2004 an empty metro train somehow rolled backward and slammed into a train with passengers that wast the woodley park station. all throw there were injuries miraculously no one got killed. federal safety officials concluded a dozing train operator probably allowed the train to roll backward. some but not all of metro's trains have software that automatically applies the brakes if a train starts rolling backward. in early 2006 the ntsb recommended that all trains be retrofitted with that antirollback software. at thursday's meeting the board that oversees metro approved and expenditure of $813,000 that will pay for metro fitting the last 182 rail cars that need the antirollback software. there's also been a very occasional problem with metro's doors. in 2008 when the trains were operating in automatic mode, the doors opened when the train came to a full stop. >> there were three incidents where the doors opened on the opposite side of the platform. >> reporter: it wasn't a human error because the human operators of the train didn't open the doors. it was an error in the door control
