romaine: it is about inflation.e tried to defend himself today and the methodology of how he came to the assumption the $2000 check could have a negative impact on the economy. as you start to look at that through the lens of inflation and inflation expectations, why would that be a concern at this stage when the stimulus is supposed to endear you get us over the short-term hump? nathan: i don't think there is much of a case for it. it is true we have had supply chain issues with many workplaces shut down. as we have seen this year, that has not translated much into inflation. housing especially has not picked up. it is such a major component of price indices. sidedjustments on that have largely come with backlogs. you have to wait longer to buy certain appliances. you are still paying the same price. you are just waiting longer. i don't see any reason to think one-time checks even larger than $2000 would have that kind of affect. whennk it is a distraction millions of americans are facing eviction, foreclosure, not

romaine: let's cross our fingers on that.m curious about, the previous forecast they have given has been centered around the idea that we just don't know. it is hard to forecast economic conditions until we get a handle around the health crisis. atyou think that now with least two vaccines out there, they can be a little bit more definitive in their forecast? the word ive is not would use. like all of us forecasters, they have learned humility the hard way. new will be giving us charts with the risk and uncertainty around the forecast. i think what they will show is less downside risk, less uncertainty than september. still, there will be net downside risks. message, itof that , not perfect tools, but if they are good tools, why don't you use them in light of downside risks and drag on the economy. potentiallyry brewing perhaps next summer is as we get herd immunity, as the reopening happens, that we get a bout of inflation. all that noted at all the members of the fomc will be able to do that. >> they know the difference bet

romaine: remind me, we got an update on economic conditions. i guess there is not really an inflation structure right now in that forecasting. but i am curious as to what the general outlook is here that we heard today from powell in regards to even the importance of inflation -- to ewven the -- to even the portence of inflation. yelena: bloomberg economics do not expect a significant increase in inflation. be some sort of a price shift. earlier price shift when the pandemic was raging, decline in prices. now we are going to see a rebound. constituteswhat significant inflation on a sustainable basis. something the fed will need to seek to raise rates. projections from the fed today, they downgraded the unemployment rate. inflation wereor not significantly upgraded. so we are still not reaching the 2% target until 2023, according to their projections. so that just means we are not going to see inflation on a sustainable basis anytime soon. romaine: something to keep an eye on. yelena, always great to catch up with you. coming up, we're going to

romaine: i am curious do how much of these em banks follow the fed.t seems like in years past you could set your watch by what the fed does. that correlation seemed to break down over the next year. is that correlation going to return? emily: that is a great point. it seems like we are entering this place where the emerging-market central banks will be on hold for a while. that will be the case for the fed, the ecb, and bank of japan. it becomes a game of emerging-market economies where you have the potential for them to run hot. those may be the ones that have room to tinker with policy. joe: in terms of lessons from this crisis, something that fascinates me, we saw some em's did forms of qe, some of them we saw do aggressive physical expansion. -- fiscal expansion. have we learned some countries have more power to run countercyclical fiscal policies than during crises of the past? emily: i think so. it has been an amazing time for monitoring fiscal policies to see how well we can respond to crises when needed. wethe emerging-markets side, have seen

headquarters -- romaine: let's get you caught up on what going on. the s&p dow and nasdaq closing at record highs. caroline: an extraordinary week, record highs on the stock markets and also on the death count, the push-pull of is seeing assets being pushed and pulled around also. stocks, commodities, risk assets have been on fire and what exactly are the pricing in? hopes of a vaccine, hopes of stimulus? how can that fed wire without some sort of his -- fiscal lifeline? the day was so bad it looked good because as many events started to set in that we see congress actually pushed through some sort of deal, so many angles to digest today, but what is clear is this rotation trade is on the front and center. joe: absolutely, everything is flying but was -- what has really been flying are these deep cyclical commodity linked equities that have been dormant for most of the year and they continue to have really strong weeks. stocks, youenergy look at the end of november basically right ever since we got the vaccine news they have been shooting straight up

romaine: do you think that's realistic?you believe what powell and the fed have been saying, there is an inflation reaction they would have should you start to see it materialize in a meaningful way. we can argue about how long that would take but at some point, you would think the fed's hand would be forced. one of the potentially interesting narratives going q2, q3 boomar, this -- that is the cage match between average inflationary targets versus the upside risks. probably end up being the fedw and i think pots resolve may surprise people. governor brain art in a speech in february which predates the covid shock came up with the idea of opportunistic reflation which would be the leaning into the outsized temporary inflation moves and using that as a their goalo get to and inflation expectations back to 32%. it sort of speaks slightly to -- we talk about it a lot, the inequality that has been so painfully obvious. it something we heard jay powell speak about even prior to covid, driving unemployment quite so low started to

romaine: and i'm romaine bostick. concerns about stimulus take a bite out of u.s. equities. joe: but the question is, what'd you miss? longine: the fed pose a shadow is cast over europe's treasury markets, holding back yields. as we see boundaries of the reflationary trade push commodities and small-cap higher, treasury markets are not playing along with the bet on u.s. economies. by theeing held back fed's outside presence. we get a clearer guidance at the fed meeting wednesday? we will debate that. joe, what is abundantly clear, with the two-year yields near record lows and the risk off feeling, the market does not want to fight the fed, even if they believe in a recovery. joe: i think that's exactly right. one of the key dynamics with this market today, notwithstanding, is that even with strong signs of an ongoing recovery and an incredible risk on move in stocks and industrial commodities, 10 year yields have not been inching higher the way people would have expected in this type of environment and today falling back down. we could not even break one, we again.low .9 ifa
