it is much lower than that romney.you can see with a positive comments, the positive sentiments spiked. after that first debate, you can see that conservative leaning twitter posters, they were excited. and they were posting positive things and it dropped off but you can see it spike again with the debates. we are not interested in the overall trend of how conservative posters posted. we wanted to look at tea party versus gop and here is where our findings overlap with that of the previous discussion. if you look in the far right column, the ratio of positive to negative tweets, tea party versus gop, they were equally as negative toward barack obama. it did not matter if you hash tagged gop or teaparty. same thing with mitt romney. exactly same thing, the positive to negative ratio. positive statements to negative statements. if you look at this now you can see a bit of a division. tea party members were more critical of both parties compared to establishment republicans. what does that mean? it means we have a divided

bush and got to know mitt romney on the campaign trail.n the case of both men if people would have been able to see them the way i did they would have had different perceptions of them. how do you overcome that in the campaign? >> well, i haven't seen the new documentary but i've read a lot about it. and stipulate two things at the beginning, one is, it is always easy to look back and say if it only had been done this way it would have turned out differently. and secondly if you try to gauge how things may have played out, you're engaging in a retrospective way. and in 2008, and 2012, we have had republican nominees who -- private men who were private about themselves. and particular wely in the case mitt romney we had a warm and gracious and a loving father and husband, a man of great character. but a lot of that warmth and a lot of what that meant to his life and things through which people would have come to have a bigger understanding of him, were simply not shared. and i think this documentary is going to show a lot of people a side o

what was your point about mitt romney? >> i think that his response was that he was responding to the sincerity in her apology and not only did she write a piece for msnbc.com and sent out several tweets. she said without qualification and also i'm paraphrasing now, it's not for me to say how much hurt i cause people i may have offended even if i don't think it's offensive. she knew it was offensive. recognized that. as ben franklin says, don't ruin an apology with an excuse. there was no excuses here. that's what made it so powerful, her apology. it was definitely warranted. >> maybe this is a playbook for future cable news hosts who have to apologize for future offenses. >> i think you're right. this business we're in, this 24/7 constant adding twitter on top of that, there's always this incentive to say something that's news worthy, attention getting, but it's really easy to cross the line into offensive and stupid. and that's a split second judgment sometimes. what really matters is how you address it when it happens.

mitt romney says there's only one problem. the president is doing this with bore rod money, actually your borrowed money like a guy who stands up at a bar says drinks for the house and up and leaves you with the bill. romney i know you don't drink. i know mormon doesn't drink. although news like this may drive you to drink. what do you make of this? >> this is a political oriented effort on behalf of the president. he wants to show he's doing something. i guess i would like to know how many federal contractors are paid at the minimum wage. my guess is not a lot. the idea that federal workers are going to be paid even more than people in the private-sector, i'm sure that's going to make a lot of taxpayers unhappy, but, you know, i think the president is desperate to show some kind of progress on some part of his agenda, even if case of something like this. it's probably pretty modest in term of the number of people affected. the real issue comes down the minimum wage. >> so you would be open to raising it but not to that level,

you, of course, covered the mitt romney campaign.rspective is this more personal or a historical record of a campaign? >> the family was welcome to the experience. this goes back to 2006 they started shooting. the access is unheard of, and i think what really strikes you when you watch this documentary, chris, is it really is a contrast to that sort of robotic caricature, the cardboard caricature in some ways, stiff as he was described, stilted mitt romney. you literally are with him in some of his toughest, most painful moments when they find out they have lost, you're in that room. >> let me ask you about that, because it is one of the most talked about moments, election night. can we play that? >> well, if you go back and look at people who have run and don't go back to the senate or haven't been a vice president in the past, but just run and lose, they pretty much go off the stage and that's probably as it ought to be, but i'm not worried about that. i have plenty of time with my kids. >> i just can't believe you're going to lose

in your book, you don't imply it. >> i say it. >> not mitt romney the person.m happy to make that distinction for you, so you don't have to do it. but in particular, you're very critical. the 47%, because you thought it opened up a bigger problem for mitt romney, and that's this idea that he wasn't -- he didn't care about the issues that people say that meant most to them personally, care about people like me, that question. it's always a very important question, it's more important than ideology sometimes with swing voters, and you thought 47% he lost touch with that. explain. >> yeah, and i think the important part was not just it was politically inappropriate, something he shouldn't have said out in public, but something that really the campaign shouldn't have thought. and my point was going back and doing research, back to 1980, because i think many in the romney camp tried to parallel their campaign very much like the reagan campaign in 1980 against jimmy carter thinking, you just make it a referendum on the incumbent, the economy is so bad, voters will pu

the mitt romney campaign not so much.n you look at other races in the broader, you can see there are huge problems facing the republican party. first, minority voters, african- americans make up or 10% of the electorate and presidential candidate loses by 87 points, that is pretty bad. when hispanics take up 10% of the votes admit romney lost by 44 points, the group i like to point to is making a statement is a smaller group, asian voters that make up three percent of the electorate. let's do some profiling here. what are the stereotypes of asian americans? hard-working, capitalistic. a lower unemployment rate than whites. higher household income. they tend to be culturally conservative. that describes republicans. attributes that one was described as the republican party. mitt romney lost the asian vote by 47 percentage points, three points more than he lost the hispanic vote. that is really interesting to me. the vote for congress was almost identical. you say no one was talking about the asian vote. when you look at th
