over the last weekend there, the romney numbers showed romney gaining strong momentum in these key states. in wisconsin, obama lost 4 points in the polling just as romneyained 4 tying up the race. in new hampshire, obama lost 4 while romney gained 3. giving him a decisive lead. the magazine quotes a romney aide on election night talking to romney's son tagg as the results were coming in. he looked like he was in a complete state of shock, as if these numbers cannot be real. to make matters worse, their polling told them florida and virginia, two states that romney lost, were in the bag. the republican party is left asking itself what went wrong and how they fix it. john brabender is a republican strategist and top adviser to rick santorum, and robert shrum, democratic strategist and columnist for the daily beast. john, you're on the inside. you know something about this. do you understand how somebody would think that the electorate that's going to participate in 2012, in a general election with barack obama, an african-american, a democrat, and a relatively popular president, would create a different electorate than the one you saw say in 2010 or in a

romney poll off by almost 8. again, ouch. in iowa, a tie. romney won by almost 6 points. in minnesota, romney poll showed romney up by 4. 7.7. in wisconsin, showing obama up by 4. he won by 6.8. in pennsylvania the romney poll showed obama up three points. he won by 5.4. so these are big swings. this isn't a little bit off. so the question becomes, why were the romney numbers so very off? the reporter who got the polling data posed that question to romney polster neil newhouse. he said, quote, i'm not sure what answer is, newhouse said. his future client may want to know that. he said his polls were more accurate than most of the other swing states. though there was a knowledge of the electorate. he said the colorado latino vote was challenging as it was in florida. the romney campaign also stemmed in part from the voter intensity. their polls asked voters how interested they were in the election on a scale of 1-10. voters who scored 8, 9 or 10 romney led in three of the six key states. just turned out those voters accounted for a smaller amount of the electorate than anticipated. numbers show romney stalling out during
