ron bosch, thank you so much for speaking with us. explain how in your it unusual it is for a pilot to request a deviation from course which was the situation in this case? >> it's a not uncommon event. the aircraft was at its initial cruising altitude of 32,000 feet. the fact that it's in the tropics there where there's a lot of buildup of cloud and a lot of thunderstorms in that region. so the actual requesting a deviation from track is not uncommon. and as far as i understand, the pilot had indicated to air traffic control that the request for deviation was as a result of weather on the direct track. so not an unusual occurrence. but these are modern aircraft and they are fully equipped to deal with this type of weather. >> and ron take us through the emergency procedure that would have usually taken place on board the plane in such a situation? >> look, the aircraft is an a-320, a very modern aircraft, i believe this particular aircraft was only six years pomed a old. a very established airline winning sky track's aircraft carrier

ron allen is outside on the plaza. good evening. >> reporter: good evening. thing are pretty festive. this is the second time in just over a week the grand jury has decided not to indict a police officer for killing an unarmed black man. here and in cities across the country, they are now adding the game eric garner to their cries and taking to the streets. >> police are bracing for protests and potential flash points like at the annual lighting of the rockefeller christmas tree in manhattan. at times square, crowds of protesters gathering. at grand central station, a so-called die-in. and at 30th street station, laying still for four minutes, repping the four hours michael brown's body lay on the ground before being taken away. >> we've hit frankly a breaking point in the african-american community where the community now says and wants the nation to hear it cannot go on any longer. you have to understand that, again, these are people's children that are being killed. and you cannot have that happen and have no response. so it's really a cry to be heard. the

nbc's ron mott is outside the church tonight. ron, good evening. >> reporter: good evening, kate. the wake for officer rafael ramos continues tonight, all afternoon mourners have been streaming into this church you see behind me. it is a significant show of support that is spread well beyond new york city. a somber processional for a fallen officer. the body of rafael ramos brought into a church today, quiet salute and long lines to honor his life. >> we love rafael ramos. he was a gift to our church. we're going to miss him a great deal. >> great to see everybody get together the way they have for a very good fellow officer ramos. >> reporter: ramos and his partner wenjian liu were gunned down over the weekend sitting in their patrol car. liu, married just two months. his widow sobbed as a news conference announced a 9/11 charity is raising money to pay off mortgages for both families. >> we want to help lift them out of some of the despair they're in today. >> reporter: vice president biden will attend ramos' funeral on saturday along with as many as 25,000 officers estimated by
