when you have the answer on the face of the constitution, that's your answer. >> ron, what is speakerelosi's strategy here? do you think it's working? >> i think it's a one point of leverage really to force discussion of the remarkable kind of acquiesce to the white house demands. as we have been discussing, 51 votes sets the senate procedures. democrats don't have the leverage to kind of pressure the republican majority into the kind of trial they want to see. the one source of leverage they do have is the ability to focus discussion on the terms of the trial withholding the articles of impeachment. obviously they have to send them sooner or later because they want the senate to have a trial but this period really allows them to -- the leverage they have is what's happening right now. we're discussing it. we probably would not if they had sent them over. >> true. good point. if the trump administration and senate majority leader mcconnell are unwilling to work with senate democrats, what recourse do you think democrats have? >> legally, there's almost nothing the democrats can do. th

ron klain, let me start with you on what you saw in this judiciary committee hearing tonight. this is one of the most historic moments that any of those members of that committee will experience. >> it was, lawrence. i think what you saw was democrats proceeding on the evidence and the facts making the case with some reluctance about having to do what they're doing and the republicans really just kind of throwing in the towel. they don't really have a defense of the president. they don't really have a defense of his conduct. they make some lame arguments about the procedural defects they claim in this process. but basically they are just sitting there waiting for this to be over because they know that the house is going to do its job and this committee will proceed to vote tomorrow on articles of impeachment. >> jill, we always turn to you for how this differs from the diversion of this that occurred during the nixon impeachment in that same committee. >> well, first of all, what i heard is pretty much what ron heard. with the republicans having no factual rebuttal to anything

with us for more, ron.is many titles, senate judiciary, former chief of staff to al gore during clinton impeachment, former chief of staff to joe biden who these days he is informally advising along the way on the campaign. ron, if the president is really talking about a witness list that includes pelosi, schiff, joe and hunter biden, can they say no? can they be compelled to appear? >> well, i think if a majority of the senate were to vote to compel them to appear, then they could. but we're talking about a trial, brian, not a reality tv show produced by donald trump. and the people who i think if there are going to be witnesses at the trial will be witnesses who were part of the events. joe biden, nancy pelosi, adam schiff, they weren't on that call on july 25th. they weren't the ones that took the transcript and put it on a secret server. they weren't the ones who threatened ukraine. they weren't the oned who stonewalled congress. they're not witnesses in any sense of the word to the president's conduct.
