ron allen is standing by in the briefing room. he was on television just moments ago, the press pool came out of that blue door. ron, was this in the oval office or the cabinet room or the roosevelt room? >> the oval office, brian. i can see the tape being played back over there now, but i have a couple of notes from what the president had to say. he expressed, again, his thoughts and prayers to the victims' families. he expressed solidarity with the lgbt community. interestingly, he says that it appears the killer based on a preliminary investigation appears to have been inspired by extremist information over the internet. that the materials are being searched, that there is no clear evidence that directly externally connects isis, even though we know that the killer pledged his allegiance to isis, but there's no evidence that he was part of any larger plot. the comparison is made that it appears to be similar to what happened in san bernardino, but we don't know, for example. it's an example of what the president is going to cal

ron allen is at the white house. pete, let me start with you. this is a koicourt divided on t case. certainly you would have predicted how this would have gone down. what does it mean for the millions of people affected? >> reporter: for the moment, nothing. it means that the president's plan cannot be enforced. the white house has made clear and so has jeh johnson today that in terms of priorities for deportation, nothing has changed. if these folks stay here, we're talking about roughly 4 million adults whose children are here legally, if they don't commit any crimes, then there's going to be no priority to send them out of the country. however, if this plan had been able to be enforced, if the supreme court had said the president could do this, then it would have allowed those people to seek work permits. so they remain, as the president would say, in the shadows, thomas. one other thing about what paul ryan said today, folks will be all over the map on whether they think this is a good outcome or not. the supreme court said nothing about a president's authority. it said nothg ab

ron allen live at the white house. chris, let me begin with you. you have covered the obama white house. you've also covered so many of these horrific shootings that have taken place in this country. and this is become a pattern for the president of having to come and offer comfort. he is doing this way too often. so what do you think is going on inside amway arena? >> reporter: yeah, this is tragically familiar. you know, these are always private meetings he has with the famili families, but i have talked to family members in the past about what has happened in these meetings and also senior staff. and a lot of this is about letting him know that they're not alone, right? that the president and vice president are there, that the entire country stands behind them. sometimes people just want to be hugged. often he will ask them about their loved ones who died and they want to let him know about what they've lost. and often he'll take the cues as well from the families because some of them may have a political statement to make. they may want to know

ron allen is at the white house. spoke with turkey's president since the attack. do we know anything about the conversation? >> yes, we do. we spoke to president this morning and he expressed his condolences and condemned the attacks in very strong terms and offered turkish government and people any support the united states could offer and said that the united states will continue to share whatever information they can develop about this attack with turkey. turkey, of course, is arguably america's strongest and most important ally in this fight against isis. it is a muslim country, the only muslim country that is a member of nato. it has the long border with syria which is a big concern to the united states. the relationship between turkey and america has been complicated to say the least because there are varying levels of commitment to the fight against isis. turkey has other objectives that don't jive with what the united states wants to do. >> seeing how complicated the relationship has been in the past does thi

joining me now from the white house, nbc's ron allen. n, we learned earlier that the president has been briefed and is closely following the situation. >> reporter: indeed, kate. just to read further between the lines of that clinton statement that you just were given, note that she emphasizes turkey is a member of nato. turkey is the only muslim country that's a member of nato. she also says that it's a time to deepen our cooperation with our partners and not retreat which is obviously, could be interpreted as a statement against what donald trump has talked about banning muslims, so on and so forth. here at the white house, they have also in the past emphasized when there have been attacks in turkey that it is a muslim country. 90% or more. and that although this was an attack apparently at the international terminal, it's likely that a number of the victims are muslims. and they pointed that out to emphasize that in fact, that is what -- they are the enemies of isis as well. so that's something the white house tried to emphasize and ma

i want to get right to the white house, inside the briefing room, my colleague ron allen standing by for that, the briefing as it occurs each day with the white house press secretary, should happen any time now, ron kristin read some of the white houses push back on this, but break this down for us. what is the white house more broadly saying about this as they continue to strenuously push back against many of the claims made by republicans? >> understating it, peter, they are very aggressively pushing back and they have been for some time. the white house is not going to relitigate line by line or charge by charge the issues raised in that report. although we'll certainly ask the briefing today about those things. especially this 7:30 meeting that was chaired by the chief of staff and exactly what the focus was, the video, why that? what happened to the deployment of these assets? these military assets that were sent to benghazi and to tripoli? the white house has been emphasizing this investigation has been going on longer than the watergate investigation, the 9/11 investigation. it
