joining us right now is nbc news correspondent ron allen and also joining us is scott keys, founder of's cheap flights. how is the situation looking right now? >> it looks like a great day to fly. and there was no traffic getting here. usually it can take up to an hour to get here some days. it took me 20 minutes to get here. it's -- i think the biggest problem people have traveling today is whether they're going to be late for thanksgiving dinner or not. there's that. and it's been a relatively good few days going back. here's the flight aware map that kind of tracks delays and cancellations across the country. yesterday, you can see there were just, what, 4,000 delays. 60 cancellations. today so far there's only a little over 500 delays and 28 cancellations. that's out of about 45 to 50,000 flights. so the weather is good. the airlines have kind of been on notice that the summer/spring travel season was a disaster, step it up, and they seem to have done that. there aren't any staffing shortages that we're hearing about around the country that are impacting travel in a serious way. at

ron allen is at la guardia in queens. how is it looking?rter: it's friday and it's so far seems to be shaping up to be a light travel day here in the new york area. we talked to a number of people trying to get ahead of the big rush that's going to happen on sunday. it could be one of the busiest travel days we have seen in quite some time. we ran into a number of people yesterday, thursday, thanksgiving day, who were traveling. the air fares were cheaper. again, they were trying to avoid the big rush that happened wednesday. this is a really focused and intense travel season, the thanksgiving holiday. tsa, airlines have been gearing up for this, trying to avoid the chaos that happened during the spring and summer when people started traveling again in big numbers. so far, the tsa numbers, the screening numbers for the last few days are not up to where they were in 2019 pre-pandemic. but they are ahead of last year and the year before because so much travel was put off because of the covid pandemic. that doesn't seem to be the case now. we

joining us now is ron allen live from new york's laguardia airport. what's the situation on the ground at lga. >> reporter: it's quiet. it's not a busy travel day here just yet nor across the country. we're looking at the map and it tells you that there are only a handful of cancellations that have happened or delays and that was actually the same case yesterday, thursday, on thanksgiving day. this is day you might think of as perhaps the quiet before the storm, if you will. look around here behind me. things are moving smoothly. we looked at the tsa lines earlier and they're moving quickly as well. short weight times and looking at the numbers over the last few days, the tsa -- it's not quite up to where it was prepandemic 2019. it's a bit ahead of last year and the year before as you might expect. but not quite to the record levels of 2019. of course, the big test of all this will come on sunday which is predicted to be one of the busiest travel days we've had in a very, very long time. that's when so many people are going to be trying to end their

ron allen has the latest for us. ron, welcome to you. we just heard from the district attorney.a very emotional day in buffalo. this happened six months ago. every time there's a court proceeding or some other development like the grocery store opening, it's a very difficult time for that community. the gunman pleaded guilty to 25 counts. there were ten counts of first-degree murder, ten counts of second-degree murder. there's a charge that carries a life in prison without the possibility of parole. we're waiting to hear from the families. there will be mixed feelings about whether there was a trial or not. not having a trial spares some of the emotional trauma of going through and reliving the events, but there are some relatives wanted the trial to be about the gunmakers, about social media and the role that those entities played in motivating this individual and enabling this individual to carry out this heinous attack. ten people were dead in a supermarket. here's some of what the da and the defense had to say after the guilty plea. >> no individual in the history of the sta

joining me now, jesse kirsch is live from buffalo, new york, and ron allen joins us from laguardia airporte the reasons where you are? >> reporter: it's getting cloudy. a few minutes ago, we had absolutely clear sky. but this is what we're seeing from this lake-effect snow. it comes and goes. we go from next to no visibility to a clear setting like this. when you look at the snow piled up, you would think this is the end of a pretty good snowfall, right? wrong. we're not even halfway through this storm yet. we're expecting upwards of 4 to 5 feet of snow. already we've had 2 feet of snow in parts of upstate new york. some areas seeing around 18 inches of snow and i measured 9 inches here. again, that is not even halfway through the storm here in buffalo. this system has canceled public schools here in the city for today. the buffalo bills and cleveland browns had to move their game to detroit, michigan. but we've seen some snow in michigan as well as ohio, pennsylvania, northern michigan. ohio and pennsylvania, just a dusting compared to what we're dealing with here and all of that is becau
