"saturday night live" because -- you hear a lot of folks going they can't possibly know anything if they haven't decided yet. who are these undecided voters? >> candy, they tend to be more independent than democrat or republican. they're less engaged. they're just now paying attention. we know from exit polling that about one out of ten voters made their decision in 2004 and 2008 in the last week, and in 2008 they split equally between mccain and obama, auz would expect in an open seed race. in 2004 they broke for kerry the challenger over bush the incumbent, which is also typical of an encome bent re-election. i think we're likely to see the same this time with late deciding voters breaking for romney rather than obama. >> because generally, anna, isn't that sort of how it generally works is that the president is well known, so if they're undecided a week before, you clearly know they have problems with the president

joining us now, jim acosta and on the phone, ron brown. great to have you both with us.et me start with you, you've been following this story all evening. clearly, the primary objective for the romney campaign was to get ahead of this story, otherwise he wouldn't have gone in front of the cameras to address the controversy. what's your take. do you think they were able to regain control of this story? >> well, i think it's very interesting they called this news conference roughly 15 to 20 minutes before it even started. that goes to show you how quickly they felt they needed to get on top of this. during that news conference, you heard mitt romney refer to president obama's, what did he call it? government centered approach. he said that repeatedly, and, yes, he does talk about that out on the campaign trail. what this gets to, what this was revealed in some of these hidden camera videos, mitt romney for a while now has been saying something different behind closed doors at these fund-raisers, compared to what he said at public rallies, i think that's why he had to get o

there's an interesting piece i think of ron brown steen at the national journal talking about romney embracing the idea behind the comments, the makers versus takers argument popular on the right and tieing that in with the welfare steph of romney, with the medicare message and basically saying that what romney is doing here from a tactical standpoint is targeting the message of an older, more white electorate with the idea, hey, you have something to lose in this election. whether people are taking the money and using it for welfare and don't deserve and taking the medicare or sort of people who aren't paying taxes like you are and taking advantage of the system. he's sayinging this skewed to a more older white population and an activist says basically it reinforces the framing of forward and back ward. i wonder what you make of that. is that the best way to read this, the romney campaign is going after a narrow, specific demographic here and driving up the support with that group? >> well, i agree with ron bro brownstein's analysis that mitt romney is targeting a particular demogra

ron brown points out to win this time, governor romney needs a historic performance from white peopleey graham underlines this. the demographics race we are losing badly. we are not generating enough angry white guys to stay in business for the long term. is he right, and what is the way forward for the 90% party? do you have to broaden out? >> you talk about the white voters in america or any ethnic group. you talk about doing the right thing, taking the right policies. but they do have to do political outreach. there's no doubt about it. that will be seen through compromise. >> the name jeb bush has come up a few times in our conversation today. i imagine it will come up a lot in the next four years if republicans don't win this fall. how much of an issue do you think it is to republicans that his name is bush? just from a sort of basic political calculations, you know, the links to his brother and all the memories of what happened on george w. bush's watch, how much of a liability is the bush name within the republican party. >> i think they thought it was a liability towards 2012.
