senior analyst ron brownstein joins me now. great to speak to you.bolism, politics all about symbolism a lot of the time. for mr. trump standing in front of mt. rushmore, powerful. what did you make of the speech? >> july fourth is holiday that connotes national unity and heritage. it's a moment that when presidents speak, binds americans together. he used this occasion to make one of his most unadulterated calls to arms for red america against blue america. it was an extraordinary speech, it was a vision of visions. so profound that you do wonder if even republicans who need to win voters beyond the trump base are willing to go down as dark a road as the president laid out tonight. >> yeah, this wasn't a subtle dog whistle. >> no. >> seemed like a treatise, and like you said, a call to arms. how dangerous was it? and more importantly who was listening? who was this aimed at? >> as we've talked about before, i believe the core of the trump coalition are voters most uneasy about the way the country is changing, demographically, culturally and economic

joining me now is cnn's senior political analyst, ron brownstein. i hate to be so flippant. the president can't move the election so what is this about? >> the president can't move the election and he knows that. what i think this is about is he is testing the water to see how far he can go and keep republicans in congress with him as he tries to delegitimize the election and potentially as we saw more explicitly in the election, test the results after. it is striking, don, that while republicans today said obviously they're going to acknowledge the sky is blue, he can't delay the election, i didn't see any of them say this is dangerous, this is undemocratic, this is ominous, stop it. they all just kind of said, it's wrong, he's wrong but he's right to be worried about fraud. and john cornyn said he's joking. the party is joking to see how far along he can bring the election. >> does he know though he can't do it? >> somebody knows. i mean, somebody around -- >> somebody knows but does he actually know? i'm not even so sure about that. >> even bill barr wouldn't say he can't

let's bring back our senior white house correspondent pamela brown along with ron brownstein, he is the senior editor over at "the atlantic." pamela, you've been doing excellent reporting on this. the president today made that totally unfounded claim that voting by mail would lead to what he calls the greatest election disaster in history. but your new reporting makes it abundantly clear the president's own top intelligence officials simply don't share that concern. well, what impact could all of this have in the run-up to the election on november 3rd? >> reporter: well, it could certainly sow distrust in the system and the election results. and that is what intelligence officials are very concerned about. a source i spoke with today, wolf, says there's a lot of concern in the intelligence and law enforcement community that foreign adversaries like china and russia could exploit what the president is doing in terms of casting doubt on the election results and saying that mail-in ballots are fraudulent. even this ominous warning from the president without any evidence that foreign advers

. >> reporter: joining me to discuss it is ron brownstein and senior ed for for account the atlantic" and jessica chambers from mcclatchy. we understand the white house staffers around the president had to plead with him for months to wear a mask. and particularly for this visit to walter reed medical center. why do you think it took so long to follow his own administration's guidance, the cdc guidelines? >> well, we still haven't actually seen the president wear a marv. he said he will wear it later but it's important to know how this visit is going to go down. it is closed press which means reporters will not be allowed inside. and unless he opens that pup which we do not expect we wouldn't even see him wearing a matching inside. the white house would have to send out pictures of their own of that or unless he was wearing it on his way outside inside. that would be critical as to whether or not he wears it and a place where reporters can see it or the white house distributes photos after the fact of the president wearing a mask. >> yeah, that's a very good point. he is visiting a ho
