let's talk about that more with cnn senior political analyst ron brownstein and margaret talive. e is making a show of fighting this subpoena, which quite frankly, is a political move. and the reality is he talked a lot about his trump conversations, his conversations with trump around this in his memoir. i mean, he's been trying to basically have it both ways, kind of all along here, pleasing all sides of the gop, but honestly, i really struggle to see where the lane is for him right now. how tough is dealing with the subpoena for him from a political perspective? >> there was a novel in the '70s, 7% solution. i feel like he's on track for a 7% performance in the republican race. precisely because of what you are outlining. he really has not been able to decide whether he wants to run as kind of an extension of trump or defining himself in greater opposition than he's done so far. he did his duty on january 6th. there's a question about whether he has done his duty since january 6th. because certainly, no one has a closer, up front and personal view of whether trump's actions ren

public comment about the latest airborne objects, and now calling for more of an explanation is ron brownsteinm "the atlantic." in the wake of the first shootdown, the president commented and commented in advance, and now afterwards, you have three more, and just as we were asking is there another threat? are you worried about escalation? what are these? are these answers that the president needs to answer right now? >> well, sooner or later, and i am not sure about right now, but there are so many unanswered questions, including ones that you were addressing with professor clapper, and whether we are finding more or whether it is going on at an accelerated pace, and where is this coming from, and is there a threat that is to minimize the actual military consequences. but, yes, when there are question of this magnitude, it is incumbent on the foreign senate committee, and he would be comfortable to step out and talk about this from the public, so i think that we will be hearing about concern from the white house before it is confirmed. >>> and a lot to cover. we have debt ceiling action, and t

. >>> ron brownstein is a cnn senior analyst. ron, good to see you.he president's decision. it would have been huge news if she said, no, i'm not into it. how big a deal is this from joe biden? >> well, not only does she support it, but in her mind, she said in her mind the decision has been made. we're in kind of a strange position on the democratic side because on the one hand, you know, we see consistently in poland there are a large number of rank and file democrats who are skeptical about biden running again. that was evident in the polls that continue to come out. they worry he's too old. on the other hand, there is no institutional support anywhere in the party for a challenge. i mean, you know, normally you would look at those numbers and say, well, if some ambitious new politician would make a name for themselves by challenging. but i don't think anybody else would be as strong as him in '24. so he has lots of time to make his decision. but i think democrats, the institutional force of the democratic party are comfortable with them running ag

i want to bring in cnn's political analyst ron brownstein.. let me ask, your huge movie buff. tell me, you must of been a little bit starstruck seeing him there. >> you know, i wrote a book a long time ago called the power and the glitter about the history and relationship between hollywood and politics. and going back all the way to the 19 twenties, there really has not been a celebrity who has been quite as effective over the years as bono. he was kind of renowned for being able to work with both republicans and democrats, both a relationship with the light jesse helms and i think he was there. you heard president biden, as part of the outreach part of the speech, praised former president george w. bush and his work on combatting hiv aids in africa. and that was something that bono was very involved in. >> i mean, with or without him, we can't live with or without him. see what i did there, it was a whole lyric. anyway, [laughter] i want to move on to another part. here i want to know how you thought the other be in the room, joe biden, was

. >>> and i want to bring in ron brownstein the seven year editor for the atlantic. what are the political consequences of the biden administration's handling of the ohio train derailment with some republicans calling response flawed in. >> when you are president everything that happens in your watch lands on your desk. the people there are hurting and scared and worried and the administration is going to face questions about whether it acted quickly or completely enough but the broader republican argument that biden is down playing this because he is not interested in a blue collar, rural community that is deep in trump country. i think trump won over 70% of that county. i think that is a much harder case to make. biden has made clear, i think -- just looking from pure politics he puts no higher priority on anything than improving the democratic position among white, working -- among working class voters of all races and this kind of outrage that he went to ukraine instead of ohio really seems to be off point. as i said there's a real issue about if the response has

ron brownstein writes for cnn.com, we saw a breadth, the spectrum of responses. what are you expecting from the president tonight? >> i'm expecting president biden to follow president obama's approach. i expect him to congratulate the republicans for winning the house. i expect him to welcome the new speaker of the house. by the way, george w. bush welcomed nancy pelosi and made a point of the fact that she was the first woman speaker. i expect him also to talk about the ways that the parties can work together, but there's one big difference that gives president biden an advantage over president obama. >> what's that? >> he can point to the fact that unity has already brought results, that the 117th congress saw republicans and democrats voting for a number of measures. you know, in our system, even if the democrats control the senate, they still need the republicans to avoid a filibuster. so he can say, you know, people, when we work together, this is what we achieve, and he can go down and list all the achievements of the 117th congress. he's not only going to
