ron claiborne reporting in from the scene. so another american's son has been added to that gallery of young men descending into violence. as the nation watched in horror. this time we know he's a shy sophomore. but what more does the crime say about who he is? abc's chief justice correspondent pierre thomas with what the experts are telling us tonight. >> reporter: why would a 16-year-old high school sophomore arm himself with knives and try to stab as many of his his classmates as possible? >> it was kind of a random thing and didn't have targets in mind. >> reporter: attacking with no expression. emotionless. he was not a star athlete. not the class president. an average kid who allegedly did something unspeakable. motive unclear. police are investigating schoolyard rumors that he was bullied. he joins perpetrators of mass violence in the past. columbine in colorado, kentucky, sandy hook, newtown, connecticut. young men ages 12 to 20 similar with dark sides, those around them never understood. brad is a former fbi profiler.

ron claiborne, abc news, new york. >>> and now we turn to the search for the missing passenger plane, flight 370. all hope resting with the unmanned submarines tracing the bottom of the ocean. as families wait, today they released a list of questions they say malaysian authorities had failed to answer. abc's chief investigative correspondent brian ross says some of those families are feeling vulnerable in another way. >> reporter: in the midst of their anguish and grief, the families of the missing passengers say they are being besieged by high stakes versions of ambulance chasers, u.s. lawyers looking for clients. >> that's piling insults on to injury. and that's just not acceptable. >> reporter: among the u.s. lawyers who have already shown up in malaysia are members of the ribbeck law firm from chicago led by monica ribbeck kelly discussing multimillion dollar lawsuits against boeing, even though we don't know what actually happened. >> we cannot wait for them to find the wreckage. >> reporter: according to two counselors, the firm has been distributing business cards and brochures

ron claiborne has more on the suspect and his mother's emotional message. >> reporter: at his hearing in a boston courtroom, kevin kayvon edson appeared grim. but said nothing. the 25-year-old is in a state psychiatric hospital. he's accused of leaving a backpack near the finish line, which led to some tense moments on the one-year anniversary of the marathon bombing. he was stopped by an officer who saw him ranting and walking barefoot in the middle of the street, in the pouring rain. the backpack was blown up as a precaution. police said later, there was nothing explosive inside. it contained only a rice cooker filled with confetti. edson's mother told abc news -- to have this happen on the one-year anniversary of such a horrific crime is unfathomable. she went on to say, i have two sons who struggle with mental illness. and i have had to constantly fight for 12 years to get them the help they need. she has run the marathon herself six times. and had this message for those running next week. run strong and enjoy your wonderful feeling as you cross that finish line. ron claiborne, ab

and as always, we check the morning headlines with ron claiborne. good morning, sir. >> good morning, dan harris and bianna golodryga. we begin with panic at the office at the headquarter of "the los angeles times." a worker for the communication company that leases space inside "the l.a. times" building allegedly told a co-worker he had a gun and something bad was going to happen. when the frightened worker sent a text message to colleagues, it triggered a chaotic scene, as they rush out of that building. police surrounded the building and put it in lockdown. the suspect was arrested without incident. no gun was found in that case. >>> and a suspected security threat aboard a delta airlines flight from detroit to denver. a flight attendant reportedly found a handwritten note referring to a bombing. this happened on friday. when the plane landed at denver, as scheduled, it taxied to a remote part of the airport, where it was met by fbi agents and police. everybody aboard that flight was rescreened and their luggage checked. but nothing was found. th

and abc's ron claiborne is here with all of the details. >> reporter: good morning to you, robin. in custody but not charged. this is a huge break in that case. the series of random highway shootings that has terrified people in kansas city, missouri, for the past month. police say they believe they have the person responsible. this morning, a city on-edge, may finally be able to rest easier. >> we've apprehended what we believe to be the suspect in the highway shootings. >> reporter: several dozen police officers descended upon this home in a kansas city suburb, where they arrested a male, believed to be in his 20s. authorities searched the home, towing away a car with illinois license plates. the suspect lives in the grandview neighborhood, close to the grandview triangle, where several highways intersect. that's where six of the reported shootings took place. >> the investigation is ongoing. we're still looking at evidence. >> reporter: the suspect is in custody but not yet formally charged. and the possibility of accomplices has not been ruled out, police had this one message
